How often should you change out a car battery is it every 3 or 5 years?

I agree with most of the answers here, you should test your battery maybe 4 times a year or so and when the voltage begins to dip buy a different battery. I do have a suggestion though, buy an optima battery.

They are the best battery you can get, you can mount them sideways or upside down if you want. They also have a shelf life of 12-15 years, when you discharge them completely you don't damage the battery. They are also spill-proof and 15x more vibration resistant. Also the biggest point of all is that all of their redtop batteires have a 36 month warranty. You really can't go wrong, i bought mine about 5 years ago and have never had a problem since.

http://www.optimabatteries.comHow often should you change out a car battery is it every 3 or 5 years?batteries don't need to be changed regularly. best bet is to load test it when you service the engine. And also check the voltage output from your alternator. It should be between 12.8-13.8 v.
How often should you change out a car battery is it every 3 or 5 years?
There is no definite time period on a battery exchange . Too many factors control the life of a battery . All you can do is watch it . I have had one last as long as 6 years and as short as 6 months .
How often should you change out a car battery is it every 3 or 5 years?
there is no set time just always do a charging system test and keep the cables and clamps clean and free of corrosion a weak charging system or excess load on the system like huge power amps or off road lights take a toll on a battery
Most batteries are stamped with the life span. Now whether they last the full stamped life is doubtful. Id say change it every 4 years, 3 if you live in an extreme climate. There is also something to be said for the quality of the battery you buy and the life span.
it all depends on the climate, its the opposite of what you would think, if you live in hotter climates, you will need to change much more often, every 3 years to be safe, if you live in colder climates, you can go for up to 6 years, but thats pushin it.

  • I think my car battery is dying?

Few days ago my %26quot;service Engine Soon%26quot; light came on. I think it's referring to the battery because recently the automatic door locks don't work automatically and the radio doesn't work now..the dashbaord lights are dim. How long can I keep driving before I have to change the battery?I think my car battery is dying?Drive it until it dies and wont restart. THEN, you'll know it's time.

    NOW, for the REAL answer:

Take the car to a competent mechanic and have it fixed. Stop being a cheapo. You're going to end up walking if you neglect your car this way.
I think my car battery is dying?
first of all, if your battery goes bad it wouldnt make your check engine light come on.

as for the battery the only way to check it is to use a voltmeter on it. see how much volts and amps its running and how much resistance it has, or best yet, take it to auto zone and they will do this for free.

if its running low because altinator isnt working, here is an easy test.

first, start the car, while its running, unhook the positive wire from the battery. if it dies rite away, then your alternator is gone, and this is why your battery is going down. this means your car is running off the battery alone, and after it drains the battery, the car stalls.

if it stays running, alternator is fine and its just the battery.
I think my car battery is dying?
your battery shouldnt just die. it might be an alternator problem. go to the autoparts store, and they can tell you exactly why the light is on for free
first thing to do is go the the parts store and have them test both the battery and alternator.sound like the alternator is dieing,so get it done fast before you get stuck along side the road and have to pay for a towing bill on top they alternator replacement.
I'd guess it's the alternator; a new one is expensive but you can pick them up cheap from breaker's yards.

Try taking the battery terminals off your battery for about 5 minutes. this might reset the brain that controls the gauge.

i have had the same problem myself. take a paper clip and bend it to go through the hole around the odometer reset. gently turn the needle counterclockwise back to normal position. it will be fine

Is my car battery dead!! Please help ASAP!!!!! Easy 10 Pts?

I went to start my car and the music came on, I was able to roll my windows down, but my car wouldn't start. I tried to turn the key again and it gave me a clicking noise. Is this just the battery? I've had the car for 4 years and never changed the battery, or does this sound like another problem? Please help!Is my car battery dead!! Please help ASAP!!!!! Easy 10 Pts?It deff. sounds like the battery most batterys only have a life of about 48 months (less if the tempature is extream or the electrical demand of the car is high) I would reccomend changing the battery and when you change it go to your local autoparts store and have them test the altenator they will do it for free(just to make sure everything is OK)

Try wiggling the battery cables where they meet the battery
Sounds like it is time to replace the battery. Buy a quality battery. It will last a lot longer than a generic or Wal Mart battery.
it is probably the battery. if it was the starter you wouldn't hear the clicking.
get new battery and clean the cables.
replace battery first (it might have some juice but not eno cranking amps to actually start the engine)

if that doesnt do it replace starter.
Undo the cables on the battery and clean them. Make sure there is no corrosion. Even if there is none clean them with a wire brush. retighten the cables and start the car. If that doesnt work have auto zone or someone check the battery to make sure it is good or put a new one. If that doesnt work check ur alternator.

    Thanks!
if you can reach the starter, take something like a small hammer and tap on the starter, they stick sometimes, also check the battery terminals to make sure they are clean and tight.
try tightening the battery terminal first, if it doesn't do the job get a new battery.
just wiggle your cables and try if that doesnt help your battery is dead sir.

this is a quick 50 dollars gone but if you need it now you can jump it. just doesnt run off that it for long will ruin your alternator. pump a lot of the times it will charge after your jump it so if it starts after like 30 minutes of running it you probably dont need a battery
if electrical equipment (windows, radio, etc) worked fine, then it's most likely not the battery. sounds like it's probably the starter. try jumping it. if it starts, you need a new battery or alternator. if you get the same problem, it's the starter
it sounds like the battery, but there is one other thing that can do that. If you have a manual transmission, try getting the car rolling and putting it in gear.

The purpose is to kind of jar things around. Sometimes (I ahve only seen it twice in my life) the starter gets in a bad position, and it wont do anything. Get stuff moved around, and it works fine.

But, most likely, it is your battery. Not quite dead, but not enough juice to get the car started.
maybe battery contacts loose maybe something left on overnight.

when you get started make sure the alternator is charging the battery

if all is good and problem comes back test battery or just get a new one

After changing starter, my car acts as if there is no battery.?

Two days ago the car had trouble starting.. I'd turn the key and there would just be a clicking noise. After a few turns the car would start and be perfectly normal. Then, today, it wouldn't start at all... Same clicking noise but wouldn't start at all. So, I bought a new starter, installed it exactly how the old one was installed. I don't know if this matters but I initially forgot to unhook the battery before I installed the new starter and I did get a bit of a shock.. but I quickly got up and unhooked it then finished the job.

When I got back in, thinking everything would be fine... I turn the key and nothing! No lights, no noises... As if there was no battery hooked up at all. The battery is a brand new red-top, there's no way that it's dead. I took it down off the jack-stands and tried to start it again and it started with two tries. I let it sit for a few minutes then shut it off and tried to start it again and now.... it's back to no power at all.

    Any ideas?

It sounds like the battery or the cable is bad. Or the starter relay or solenoid it bad.
Are you sure you didn't pop 1 of the 2 ign 30A fuses? There are usually two power cables going to the battery lead that hooks to the starter, are you sure you haven't left one off by accident?

Normally the electronic door key will reset it when you open the car, if your key fob does not work you may have to get a garage to reset it
Varies from car to car, for example a 306 needs to have the key in the ignition with it turned on to the first position, then you need to press the central locking button on the key.

zap...take to shop or junk it,,,,

1 your gona need a new battery

2 computer may be fried [500 to 2000 dollars]

3 other electrical parts may be fried... starter 300 dollars,,,alternator 300 dollars...wiring..many hours and 80 to 100 an hour

    sorry for your expensive lesson
Consequences of connecting wrong terminals on car' battery?
At the very least, you probably fried the battery. That's no big deal because it was already shot anyway, right? Your Engine control module might be blown, too. That's big bucks! Good luck.
Now the other stuff listed is true but also is a bunch of bull.

before you go and pay all that money and have to set in a room for hours, just go find your self another set of cables and try it agian. ; )

    Dead Car Battery?

I believe my car battery died. It started when my radio went wild, and I figured when I shut my car off it wouldn't start back up. I was able to jump and take very long drives with it 3 times, but right before getting my battery changed, it also died on me when i was driving very slow around a turn, but it also seemed like it was chugging for gas/power or something. Also the dash lights, and meters started to twitch and click uncontrollably, for about 5 minutes. I was still able to jump it after that.

Changed the battery, and the car started up fine, but the battery light is still on, and now the check engine light is on. I guess the question is, is it possible the battery is not charging, although it seems the alternator is fully functional?Dead Car Battery? What you are describing is classic %26quot;alternator is dying%26quot; symptoms. Pull the alternator/voltage regulator and take it to the parts counter at the local parts dealer. They can test it and let you know what's up.
    Dead Car Battery?
I would say your alternator is bad.
    Dead Car Battery?
alternator is fully functional.... so you had it tested.... think maybe i would jump it off and drive it to the nearest place to have it check take only a minute

What could be the problem?Car Stopped by itself, doesn't start, its new battery? Was the battery indicator on when the car was running rough? If so have the battery recharged and the alternator checked for it most likely went bad.
Car Stopped by itself, doesn't start, its new battery?
May be the starter, or a cable could be loose on the battery since it was just replaced.
Car Stopped by itself, doesn't start, its new battery?
    alternator bad
what were all of your gauges reading?... could be the alternator... although if it was the alternator you generally know when you try to start it.. very few cars die on the road cause of an alternator... that sounds like a bad ground somewhere... but thats your best bet
    I'd check the alternator first.
Probably a bad Alternator but you should make sure all the wires are tightly connected to the battery and not corroded. Sometimes it's just a poor connection.
well does it try to start if it trys its not the battery, it could be alternator, timing, fuel filter, do you know anyone who works on cars that could take look? sorry that answered with a question but its hard to say whats the prob
The battery could have a manufacturers defect and so it's still possible your new battery is bad. Aside from which other causes could be a bad connection to your battery or to your ignition wiring. It could also be your ignition switch on the steering column. Or it could be your alternator, voltage regulator, other electrical connections like the cables going to your alternator and even to your starter motor or starter solenoid.

Make sure there is no corrosion on the wiring at all and that all electrical contacts are tight and clean.
    Check the alternator.

I just disconnected my car battery negetaive cable while running. the car continued to run. Contrary to one an?

In a resolve question the statement was made no car would remain running, if the negative cable was removed while the car was running. I just removed the negative cable on my car, while running, and there was no noticeable change, it continued to run.I just disconnected my car battery negetaive cable while running. the car continued to run. Contrary to one an?Cars have their batteries wired in parallel to the electrical system, not in series with it. Most cars will continue to run even with the battery disconnected. (Some engine electronics will detect a disconnected battery and shut down, but that's due to their programming, not to how the battery is wired.)

Despite what someone else has said, disconnecting the battery does not cause the mean voltage in the system to increase and you are not in any way %26quot;sending 14 volts through electronics designed for 12%26quot;. Sensitive electronics are all protected by voltage regulators that will maintain proper voltage levels (interesting fact: many parts of a car's electrical system run at less than 12 volts, relying upon voltage regulators to drop the voltage).

Also, a car's electrical system is not designed for 12 volts nominal. Most automotive electrical systems are designed to operate at 13.4 volts nominal. In fact the lumen output specs for headlight bulbs stipulate the design voltage as 13.4 volts as this is the nominal output voltage for the alternator in order to provide adequate float charge to the battery.

That said, removing the battery while the engine is running is not recommended for modern vehicles as the battery does play an important role in surge suppression by absorbing current spikes and if you run a vehicle without a battery for an extended period of time you put extra strain on the voltage regulators within the vehicle's electrical system. In older vehicles that used carburetors and did not have computer controls removing the battery was fine, but it's generally not recommended for modern cars.
I just disconnected my car battery negetaive cable while running. the car continued to run. Contrary to one an?
means ur alternator is good! car can still run without battery as long as ur alternator works! but for a good 5-10 minutes

p/s car battery charges the alternator while it runs
I just disconnected my car battery negetaive cable while running. the car continued to run. Contrary to one an?
the alternator is providing power...not a good idea..you may have 14 v running in electronics built for 12.
When the car is running ,it runs off the altinator not the battery.

So as long as your altinator is good It will stay running.
I would have thought the car would continue running? The battery is used to start the car, but once it is running, then the alternator is charging the battery and running all the car's electrics.

The battery being disconnected will prevent it from charging, but the whole bodywork will still act as the negative, as it is connected to the negative of the battery charging network.

I'm glad you brought this up, as I missed the original question and it would have made me think I was missing something as I would not have agreed with the answer...
The reason is that as you have started your car and the battery simultaneously has charged the electromagnets in the alternator that create the magnetic fields in the alternator it is then able to energise itself and keep the power going, by the way many, if not most modern alternators have voltage regulators build in, if yours don`t you may damage things by running too high a voltage.

Old type generators with permanent magnets did not need a battery to supply power before they were able to produce electricity.

Now in your case you may also get some problems with your cars electronic`s if you switch your engine off while the battery is disconnected, but you have most likely figured that out by now.
Not good to do that, can damage electronics. The battery acts like a giant capacitor to dampen voltage spikes generated by the alternator.
it means your car is getting it,s juice from the alternator. i would,nt be doing that especially with these newer cars or you have a chance of burning up the computer.
    Great!, your alternator is good.

ok, make sure you have all the remotes for the vehicle with you.... turn the key off, and on the outside, punch in your 5 digit code for the keyless entry code (if you don't know the code, look in the trunk on the right side hinge support, it should be on a small sticker) then press the 1/2 button, then the lock button on each transmitter one after the other, the locks should cycle after each remote......

WHEN I START CAR BATTERY VOLTAGES IS NORMAL AND GO A BLOCK AND SHUT OFF CAR WILL RESTART?
    hi deacon,

Taking you to Battery class 101

Class the battery in the modern car isnt that different from the battery in the early cars. the sizes have changed to accomodate space issues and the voltage has changed from 6 volts to 12.

all batterys have as we all know a plus or posative and a minus or negative post. some are larger post type as used in all earlier cars and some use stud or screw in connecters. both serving the same purpose.

inside the battery there pockets or chanbers. each chanber creates its portion of the CCA design of the battery. CCA being the %26quot;cold cranking amps%26quot; depending on the manufactures specifications CCA numbers can be from 500 to 1200 cca.

here is where we must recognise the difference. cca's are what are needed critically to start an engine. the engine needs a big chunk of them just to get all 4 to 8 and more cylinders to spin in the best of conditions.

with age the chambers od the battery or cells start to look a bit like the hull of an old ship wreck. rusted debrit dropping to the floor and forming a bridge between the cells. once sucsessfully bridged accross the cell shorts out because every other cell is the same polarity meaning posative is next to negative is next to posative etc. each shorted cell kills off cca,s though theoretically the battery could charge up and show a 12 volt surface charge it may only have achieved 300 CCA,a of power to use.

also the damaged cells will drop off quickly the 12 volts that the good ones held.

    Now a question?

can you charge the battery with one cable of the jumpers removed ? (no points for a yes answer here)

to achieve power elecricity requires a posative AND a negative. your alternator represents that battery changer! if only one cablw wont recharge the battery using the home charger than only one wont on the alternator. the alternator may be being fooled by restrictions of power flow through tired cables and ends , dirt rust and corrotion into stopping the flow to the battery to replenish its use after starting.

tommorows lesson, how pennys remove battery acid
WHEN I START CAR BATTERY VOLTAGES IS NORMAL AND GO A BLOCK AND SHUT OFF CAR WILL RESTART?
Need a little more info. I don't see a question in there.

Car batteries will normally last 4 to 5 years if the charging system is in good shape. Yours is around 6, so you should expect it to fail before too much longer

Hope this answered it for you
If you've never changed the battery on a car that is almost 7 years old, perhaps now is a good time. Or, you could take it to autozone, and they'll tell you if it's your battery or something else.
what? do you mean the car wont re start? is it like the battery is dead? if the volts are fine then the battery is bad and you need a new one.

Car remote battery keeps dying why?
Maybe you are sitting on the button while I drive and killig the battery. Or maybe the battery itself just won't hold a charge anymore. Charge it, take the battery out for a week and then put it back in and see if it's dead. If it dies without being in the remote then replace the battery. As for the car locking with no battery, it's possible that there is a capacitor in there that had enough juice to power one keypunch. Or maybe you might be high. lol. I bet it's just a bad battery, sounds like it.

It's possible that button is sticking on your fob and sending a constant signal. This would drain the battery.

Barring that, WalMart's top of the line battery (the ones in the yellow case) are excellent bang for the buck ....got one in my full-size truck that I've had for about five years or so.

The %26quot;number%26quot; or rating you're looking for is the CCA or Cold Cranking Amps ....this is supposed to represent the battery's current flow capability when it is cold ...first start on a winter morning kind of thing ...I have no idea what temp they use for the rating. Bottom line is the higher the CCA rating is, in general terms, the better the battery ....the longer it will last and the more it will cost. So if you live where it gets cold in the winter then you want a higher CCA ....down in Florida, not so much.
    GO FOR EXIDE BATTERY
Quite simply if you check with a decent auto parts shop and get the correct rated battery for the car then you will get what you pay for as regards quality.

Car battery dies after being in the rain?

I have a 1991 Nissan Maxima and every time it's out in the rain the battery dies. We just got it changed too a few weeks ago but it rained last night and now nothing works. I can't press the button to unlock it and it won't respond at all when trying to start. How can I fix this issue?Car battery dies after being in the rain?Somewhere there is something on the car, maybe a light, that when it rains the rain get to this spot and shorts it to ground and your battery drains. I would look around the lights assemblies for a spot the looks like burnt spots.
Car battery dies after being in the rain?
I would suggest getting a waterproof battery box...that way no rain water gets on the battery...also...check the water level in the battery itself.
Car battery dies after being in the rain?
sounds like a dirty connection at the cables.
get a new car, it's going on 20 years old, man.

Car Battery Problem on a 05 Chevy Cobalt.?

Battery losses charge easily. I've change battery and replaced alternator yet the battery still losing charge. I've have installed a car stereo and headlights.Car Battery Problem on a 05 Chevy Cobalt.?Check your glove box light or trunk light to see if they are going out. Something is staying on in the vehicle. Some cars have a light under the hood also. A cell phone charger can drain a battery if left for 24 hours or more.Satellite radios too.
Car Battery Problem on a 05 Chevy Cobalt.?
It sounds like something is draining your battery while the car is off. If you have a stereo system installed, are your aftermarket amps wired into a switched power line? If your amps are wired to a constantly %26quot;hot%26quot; wire, then your amps will remain on and drain the battery. You can get around this by installing a power switch in the line(s) to the amp(s), or by wiring them to a switched power line (a line that only becomes %26quot;hot%26quot; when the ignition is on.

Otherwise, your alternator may not be installed properly or another electrical component may be remaining on while the car is off.

Citroen c2 wont start after changing battery in key?

I recently changed the battery in the key to my citroen c2 with senso drive and it open and locks the car fine but when i go to start the car nothing happens except for the lights coming on the dash board which i noticed there is a - symbol where n shld be i also here a noise like as if the somethings engaging then disengaging. I have no idea whats happened and only since i changed the battery the car was running fine ??Citroen c2 wont start after changing battery in key?Try putting the old ones back in and try to start it.. its worth a try.. other than that consult your dealer..
Citroen c2 wont start after changing battery in key?
How long was the battery out of the key fob for?

Some vehicle key fobs have codes built in %26amp; when you remove the battery the key fob remembers the code for about a minute or so. If a new battery is not inserted within that time the key fob 'loses' its memory %26amp; needs reprogramming at the main agents.

Try starting the vehicle with the spare key if that works contact your main agent to see about getting the key fob reprogrammed.
Citroen c2 wont start after changing battery in key?
right then, dont forget best answer this way???

first thing, to try,put the key in the passenger side door, dont use the fob,but lock and unlock about 5 times and try that.

ok if that doesnt work, disconnect the battery, leave for 10 mins, then try again, still nothing,ok put key in ignition, turn on then press the door lock button and hold in for ten seconds,in fact try this one first? then take key out and re insert it and try to start,im sure the following three options ive gave will start you?

  • If my car battery dies does it neccesarily mean i have to get a new one?

i have a toyota cressida 1990 %26amp; yesterday wen i wanted to start my car it turned on then turned off %26amp; some nice old guy jumped my car for me %26amp; ileft it on for a while %26amp; turned it back on...Now this is my first time it has happened to me %26amp; my dad told me not to change the battery cuz its new not new new but its still good...my sis bf told me to clean the battery with baking soda what should i do cuz in a week %26amp; a half im driving all the way to texas %26amp; i dont want my anything bad to happen..If my car battery dies does it neccesarily mean i have to get a new one?As long as your battery is able to start the car, after the old dude jump started it, it will be ok. Just check the water level and it will be good.
If my car battery dies does it neccesarily mean i have to get a new one?
If your battery goes dead it doesn't necessarily need to be replaced. It just needs to be recharged. Cleaning the posts with a thick mixture of baking soda and water is a good idea too(add just enough water to make the soda into a paste).

Chances are, you left on a light or something and it drained the battery. No big deal.

If you're really worried about the battery going dead again, Get a battery buddy. http://www.batterybuddy.com/

Another good thing to do is go to one of your local parts stores like advance or autozone and have them test the alternator and the battery. They do it for free.
If my car battery dies does it neccesarily mean i have to get a new one?
id try cleaning the cables and charging it back up,if it don't hold a charge then replace it,usually when one goes out its on its last days, but occasionally they will go dead because of a bad connection,if its over 4 years old replace it,don't chance it getting you out somewhere and leaving you stranded, good luck.
Depends upon how old your battery is. If it's 5 years old, get rid of it. Go to Sears and have them put in one of their DieHards. I've gotten good recommendations for those from my mechanic friends. They're about as good a battery as you're going to get.

But if your battery is quite new, then clean the posts with baking soda and water - lots of water - don't get that stuff in your eyes, ok?
Make sure the battery has sufficient water in it and put it on a battery charger. If it's a maitnance free battery, you can't check the water. You can have it load tested at a shop as well. Chances are it's still good. Just make sure your alternater is working as well.
Go to autozone or automotive store near you and you can usually get your battery checked. While you're there, get your alternator checked too. Then you will know if it's your battery, your alternator, or neither.
The battery should not die on its own, but if its run dead a couple of times it will be compromised. From your description its hard to tell if your battery was just drained (lights left on), you have bad connections at the terminals or your starter may be bad.
not necessarily if it goes flat again quickly you probably do but also check that the battery light is off when the engine is running if its on then youmay need to change the alternator as this may not be charging the battery
check you water level in battery MAKE SURE YOU USE DISTILLED WATER
no it just means u need a new battary

I changed battery, oil, break and few more things in my car recently. Now it vibrates too much when I stop.?

I changed battery, oil, break and few more things in my car recently. Now it vibrates too much when I stop.

What may be the reason.? It vibrates while I drive. It is Nissan 2001 car.I changed battery, oil, break and few more things in my car recently. Now it vibrates too much when I stop.?Are the lug nuts properly torqued?
I changed battery, oil, break and few more things in my car recently. Now it vibrates too much when I stop.?
    Try checking the engine mounts.
I changed battery, oil, break and few more things in my car recently. Now it vibrates too much when I stop.?
Well If you had the vibration issue before you worked on it, it may be an issue with your ball joints, control arms, or tie rods? If it started after you brake job, check for a frozen brake line, warped rotors, it could also be something as simple as low brake fluid pressure. Hope this helps.
There is either warn or warped brake rotors or a suspension problem.

When is the last time you had your brakes with new shoes/pads and had had the rotors cut? The calipers may need fixing or replacing from grabbing unequally.

Did you recently hit a curb or a bad pot hole?
did you have the rotors resurfaced and make sure the slide bolts are tight

    napa can resurface the rotors
    recheck ur brakes
loose caliper ? check your work. worn bearings loose rotors.
abs brakes do that when aplied hard and are palsating
    have your wheels balanced.
wires. a vacuum leak. or spark plugs not gap right.
If it vibrates only when you are stopped or in a red light, and you see the RPM going down a lot, it's probably something with the combustion, can be like the spark plugs or the injectors or loosen wires.
You've done the brakes? There's your problem. Check the pads are in correctly, if the discs have been removed/replaced, check there's nothing stopping them seating flush on the hubs, and also check there's no corrosion edges on the discs, these will catch on the pads as they rotate.

    Hope this helps.
Wheel Bearing/ hubs could be bad, does the ABS light come on while its vibrating?
If the vibration only occurs when you apply the brakes, then you must have put the brakes pads or shoes back on wrong.

There is more to changing the brakes than just just swapping old for new..

The equalisers on the pads need to be ( freed off if jammed ) and the leading edge of any break shoes fitted, need to be ( filed down a little bit ) otherwise the brake shoe will shudder when applying the brakes..

Also the retaining springs could be in the wrong place which again would make the brakes shudder.

The brake job is for an experienced mechanic to do unless you are 100% certain about what you are doing.

Can I add this kinetic battery in place of my original battery?

I just got a kinetik battery and it's a hc-1400. when I test it with my multimeter it only shows 6 volts. I know that regular car batteries have 12V. can I use this battery on my car as a replacement? or not? and is there anything I need to know about changing the battery so that I dont mess something up?

This battery is used...so maybe it needs charged? Can I add this kinetic battery in place of my original battery?if it is only a 6 volt battery, you cannot use it. if it is a 12 volt battery that has had a substantial drain, you should not use it( that kind of a drain on a battery will shorten the life of the battery. looking at the web site, they look like camera batteries, with that they will lack the cranking amps to get the engine running. after going through the entire list and not being able to find that part number i still stick to what i said before, you will not be able to use this one.

My car still wont start and i changed the battery. is it the starter or the spark plugs or something?

its a 92 toyota paseo, all fulids are fine, when i turn the key it clicks but doesnt start. the radiator fan starts and the lights turn on.My car still wont start and i changed the battery. is it the starter or the spark plugs or something?Sounds like the cylinoid on the starter is bad. Assuming that is the problem, the cure would be to either have the starter rebuilt or else install a new starter.
My car still wont start and i changed the battery. is it the starter or the spark plugs or something?
Sounds like the starter motor. You say the engine isn't turning over, just a click?

Definitely sounds like the starter motor.
My car still wont start and i changed the battery. is it the starter or the spark plugs or something?
it depends to does it try to turn like the motor wants to turn??? cuz it could be the spark plugs there probably old n it cant spark up...
ok go to auto zone and buy a bottle of dry gas and put it into your gas tank this is a simple solution to a problem that might not be a serious problem at all
If its just clicks and you don't hear the engine turn then its your starter.. But if the engine is turning.. then it could be your spark plugs or your alternator.
the battery is fine if you hear the clicking sound. the starter motor is dead. the wires sometimes break and you landed in a dead spot on the starter. if you tap the starter gently you can sometimes jump the bushings and you can start your car. it sometimes last a few days sometimes not.
keep trying to rev while turning the key don't let your foot of the gas for a second or you will have to keep trying once the car catches the spark it will try to turn the engine just keep reving when doing this then once the car starts to start keep accelerating and reving for about a minute. if this doesn't help i think it is a bad alternator go get the car checked or have mechanic come to you
I'm not sure how mechanical you are. First you can get a voltage tester and see how many volts your alternator is charging, should be 14-16 volts. Second you could either yourself or a friend take out your alternator and take to a auto parts store and have it tested as well as your regulator, you should have your answer in a couple of minutes. third if this sounds to complicated, take to a neighborhood shop and have them test your regulator
definitely the starter motor..sometimes it gets stuck when left in cold weather..if you can. get some-one to shift the drive bands from the starter motor..use a spanner ..do not pull on the band to shift it ..unless you want to lose your fingers..once it has been moved ..move the spanner away ..and try the key..you can move the band ..by putting the car in reverse and rocking the car back and forth..you need a few strong people to push the car back and forth..have the car switched off when you rock the car..on the old ford 10 we used to tap the starter motor with a hammer..but to days cars are so compact it's hard to find anything easy to get to ..

How do you recode a Blaupunkt car radio?

ya the starter sounds bad.you could try tapping it with a hammer to see if you can get the solinoid to push the gear out to the flywheel. but the starter sounds bad! Sorry dude.
Just changed a battery in chevy astro van. the starter is rotating but the car will not start up. ??? thanks?
if the starter is turning and not the engine it could be a bad starter and just a coincidence that it happened at the same time as you worked on it.

My husband change his car battery, after that his car radio/cd player is no longer working, totally out.?

Sounds like he blew a fuse. Have him check those out.My husband change his car battery, after that his car radio/cd player is no longer working, totally out.?Haha! Tighten the cables.
My husband change his car battery, after that his car radio/cd player is no longer working, totally out.?
Could be one of a couple things. The radio, especially if it's a factory installed deck, could have a theft deterrent system on it that locks it out when power is disconnected. Check the owners manual for information on this. It could also be that when he disconnected the battery and reconnected that a power spike caused a fuse to blow. This would be especially likely if it was an aftermarket radio that probably has an inline fuse on the power lead.

One other rare but possible cause is if he disconnected the battery by removing the positive cable first or reconnected by attaching the negative cable first. The negative cable should always be the first off and last on. In some rare instances, doing it in the wrong order can cause odd current paths within electronic devices that can damage the equipment.

How do I switch the battery to the car?

The bolts won't come undone. I am trying to change the battery to my 98 jeep cherokee from a 99 Ford Taurus. Is it easy to do? Or should I take it to a mechanic? How do I switch the battery to the car?iam asuming its got top post, so loosen the terminals and take a screwdriver and spread the terminal, so it will come off and you also have a hold down bolt needs to come out. its not really that hard, all you have is the terminals and a hold down bolt, unless its in a battery case.

My car's battery needs a jump if I leave the key in the ignition, even for a few minutes?

My car is a 2001 Honda van (Odessy). Is it that the battery is going dead or is it the connection to my starter? If the key is removed promptly when car is turned off, it'll start fine, but if the key was left in (to listen to music, or just key in ignition without any function) Then I need a jump.

Are these signs of a battery needing change, or is there something more?My car's battery needs a jump if I leave the key in the ignition, even for a few minutes?Your battery is weak and time for replacement. Have a load test done on it (this is where they apply a load to 1/2 of the cold crank rating for 15 seconds) if it drops below 9.6 volts during this period your battery has no holdong capacity, (ususally due to sulphated plates) if you do lots of short trips with your car this is extremely hard on the battery as it does not fully recharge after the heavy draw from starting.
My car's battery needs a jump if I leave the key in the ignition, even for a few minutes?
It definitely sounds like that you need to have your electrical system checked out for possible shorts! You may also want to check under your steering column to make sure the wiring is not freyed or loose from your ignition switch.
My car's battery needs a jump if I leave the key in the ignition, even for a few minutes?
It sound like you need a new battery. One way to find out is to test the battery using an ammeter. Your local garage should be able to do this easily.
Sounds like you need to replace your battery. Honda is an extreme great auto. What usually happens, battery from new sulfates everyday throughout the life of the battery. Also, demands and usage plays a big roll too. Extreme cold weather are also very hard on batteries. Rule of thumb, replace an auto battery every 3 years. Anything beyond this time period, your placing you and your family at high risk of battery failure unexpectedly.
Does your ceiling light use electricity when you leave the room (if you don't turn the switch to %26quot;off%26quot;)??

Well the vehicle won't use electricity if the key (ignition switch ) is off either! But it will continue to use power in a number of circuits if the key is %26quot;on%26quot; in either accessorey or ignition position! It also uses a lot less power in the %26quot;accessory%26quot; position, (than the %26quot;ign%26quot; position), since the heater (in most cars anyway) is out of circuit, along with the computer %26amp; headlights (if one of those that runs the lights when the ignition is on), - this is supposed to be a 'safety%26quot; innovation, (but it %26quot;sucks power%26quot; rapidly if engne not running), --or if alternator %26quot;quits%26quot;, -(you won't go far before the battery is dead)!

The starter itself could be wearing a little bit, - and require more %26quot;amps%26quot; to crank the engine than when new, but otherwise has nothing to do with battery going dead! But your battery could be getting near %26quot;expired condition%26quot;, - and it doesn't hold a lot of %26quot;power%26quot; anymore! As battery ages, it builds up a kind of %26quot;sludge%26quot; in the bottom of cell chambers, - it is called sulphation (%26quot;decayed%26quot; lead), - as this happens there is a little less lead on the %26quot;plates of battery%26quot; available to hold %26quot;charge%26quot;, and finally it gets to point that it %26quot;shorts out%26quot; cells, and then the battery won't hold a charge for long, -- or if a little worse won't even take a charge anymore!

So I would take the %26quot;car%26quot; to a place that sells batteries (like wal-mart, - ot AutoZone type stores), -- they can check the battery and see if it is on the way out,--Since battery could be %26quot;weak%26quot; by this time! Also I always buy the very biggest battery that I can get to fit in the battery compartment! This is especially important if you are in %26quot;cold country%26quot; as it requires more %26quot;amps%26quot; to crank a %26quot;stiff cold%26quot; engine, -- and if it is cold enough, the %26quot;cold%26quot; decreases the amount of %26quot;amps%26quot; that the battery is capable of providing. So it will naturally start the engine more easily on real cold mornings -with %26quot;big battery%26quot; (in Wisc. for instance it could be between -30 %26amp; -40 degrees)..... The manufacturer generally puts in the smallest battery that %26quot;will do the job%26quot; to keep down expenses!

Last of all,- the bigger the battery, the longer it will run accessories when the key is not in %26quot;off position%26quot;, -- %26quot;off position%26quot; actually turns everything off! All that can operate is the 'courtesy lights inside the car%26quot;, and the %26quot;idiot%26quot; (key in ignition switch warning)! Some things can still be turned on manually like the parking lights (%26amp; and headlights will work manually on some cars with the ignition off), - also 40-way flashers! Everything else is pretty much out of circuit, -with exception of direct circuits on the radio (for program memory, and clock), - and computer, - to remember %26quot;driving characteristics%26quot; of the car! Plus maybe the %26quot;anti-theft alarm%26quot; on some newer cars! If you disconnect (or the battery goes totally dead),- these programs information will be lost, - and if right kind of car, you can't even get the car to run, (as it concludes you are a %26quot;thief trying to steal the car%26quot;)! If this happens you have to re-program radio and anti-theft system, - computer will re-program as you drive the car, with the %26quot;non-default%26quot; information all over again!

DON'T just go out and buy a new battery,-- or a new alternator, till you have the total electrical charging system checked out somewhere. You may end up with a battery you %26quot;didn't need%26quot;, - or an alternator %26quot;you dind't need%26quot;, - since a %26quot;bad battery%26quot; does not nescessariuly need a new alternator (also)- to charge right!--Nor does a bad alternator nescessarily require a new battery to work right either ! I assume you asked for answer to this, because you don't have%26quot; indefinate amount of money%26quot; to spend,-- or you would have taken it to the %26quot;agency%26quot; and let them %26quot;sort it out%26quot;!

  • Car Battery for Nissan Maxima 1992?

Does it matter if I change the Nissan car battery with some other car battery? My brother seem to think that my car can use his car battery? His is a Toyota Van. Thanks.Car Battery for Nissan Maxima 1992?the toyota van battery might fit, you need a 24r series or 35 series battery for an exact fit.

a 12v battery will work in any car, it's the sizes that are unique. as for cranking power, some give more than others.

Just make sure the battery cables are attached to the correct terminals on the battery and the battery is locked down so it doesn't move.

I just changed my battery in my bmw 740il. the battery light is still on do i need to leave the car running?

i changed my battery in my 2001 740il but my battery light is still on. do i need to run my car intill it turns off or is there a way to reset it.I just changed my battery in my bmw 740il. the battery light is still on do i need to leave the car running? There is no %26quot;reset tool%26quot; to turn off a battery light. If you run your car to turn off the light, you will most likely drain your new battery. The light is telling you your battery is not being sufficiently charged while the the engine is running. The icon is battery-shaped because if it was alternator-shaped, you would not know what it meant.

Have your vehicle inspected by a qualified repair facility. You most likely have an undercharging alternator.
I just changed my battery in my bmw 740il. the battery light is still on do i need to leave the car running?
Unhook the cables for 30 sec. This should reprogram the computer...
I just changed my battery in my bmw 740il. the battery light is still on do i need to leave the car running?
ugh obviously the battery wasn't the cause of the light coming on or the light would be out, id take it to a reputable repair facility and get it properly diagnosed rather than just throwing parts (battery) at it hoping for an inexpensive fix.
if it dies on you, then chancer are you need a new alternator... obviously it's starting, so the starter must be ok... good luck
you may have a bad alternator or belt, check those out, good luck!
usually the way to reset a car (nowdays eveerything is computers )is disconecting the battery;so if you just exchange for a new one ;seems to be your alternator wich is no given enough juice.

P.s:i hope that you did'nt went cheap and got a inexpensive battery.
If the light is still on you need to take the car to autozone and get the charging system checked out (free) as it sounds like the alternator is bad.
    Wow, you have a 7 series, and I don't, I hate you.

    :)

Sorry I don't have an answer for you though.
you have to reset it with the reset tool.

Can I use a car battery on a pocket or mini bike ?

Can I use a car battery on a pocket or mini bike ? If so, whats the best to buy, whats the cheapest, how long will it last, how do I add one to my electric bike, and can I change it ? i need to know since im getting my new electric pocket / mini bike soon !Can I use a car battery on a pocket or mini bike ?You should use the type / size battery recommended for your bike. Use others at your own peril. To answer your questions in order: No, depends, also depends, dunno depends, don't do it, yes.
Can I use a car battery on a pocket or mini bike ?
No. No, no, no, no. My roommate once strapped a car battery onto his 750cc 4-cyl motorcycle b/c he was stranded and that's all he could buy. It started spewing acid out of the top, all over his back and his seat. He burned his b@lls. With sulfuric acid. I wouldn't recommend it.
Can I use a car battery on a pocket or mini bike ?
No it may work to start in an emergency but wont fit and so it will difficult to carry, That's why the make bike batteries, but your new bike will come with an appropriate battery. Do those things plug in?
The CCA may be too high. BUT, a 12V system is a 12V system.

Changed battery in car, now it dies when idling.?

Changed battery in car, now it dies when idling.?
I am probably way off, seeing how it's a new battery, but something similar happened to me once where my battery died when I was idling. I had a lot of corrosion on my cables and constantly had to clean with with coke. It would stall because they corrosion was stopping the connection - I'm sure you did, but did you check to make sure the cables were nice %26amp; tight??
Why did you change the battery to start with? Did you check the alternator? The new battery is not what is killing the engine. Either the alternator is bad or something else got messed up when the battery got changed.
Some models of cars, you have to keep a power supply to them when changing the battery, if not, your computer loses its memory. I'm gonna guess you had the battery unhooked for a length of time, while changing it. If that's the case after a short time, the computer will reset itself again. If you have only driven it a little bit since doing this, give it some time, and it should take care of itself. If not, stop by a dealer, and they may have to plug in to it, for further action.
After the battery has been disconnected, your pcm will have to reset itself. If that is the problem, then it should not take very long.
Check fan belt to alternator, even if there is no squeal it may be loose! it sounds as though above idle there is enough power to operate the vehicle. At idle the car is running on battery alone. The next course, would be to check the alternator.
Well if everything ran ok before you put the battery in then something happened. Either you hooked the battery up wrong and said oops and didn't mention it or you have a sensor unplugged to remove the battery and didn't plug it back in or have a hose off somewhere. In this case you should have a check engine light on. One the oops part if you don't replace a battery correctly or are not careful in removing the cables you can send a voltage spike to the computer and damage it.
It has a bad alternator. Get it fixed and you wont have a problem.

    Car Battery keeps getting corroded?

Ive changed the battery terminals to my car battery due to the amount of corrosion built up on them. However within 1 week they were right back where i started. EXTREMELY corroded and causing starting issues. What could possibly be causing this?Car Battery keeps getting corroded? It is possible that the alternator is over charging, if it test good. There are anti corrosion pads made to go around the battery post and sprays available at the auto parts store.
    Car Battery keeps getting corroded?
Many times the corrosion is caused by the evaporation of the battery acid- during running and charging there is some evaporation that occurs. If there is a starting problem, that is usually indicative of an unclean surface that is being bolted to- either the wries were not clean or the terminals on the battery were not scraped. After using a wire brush to ensure that things are shiny clean, and putting every bolt to its proper tightness, use spray grease, spray paint, or %26quot;high tack%26quot; spray to inhibit future corrosion- they will each deter the acid that gets on the metal to create more corrosion.
    Car Battery keeps getting corroded?
oxidation is the cause, grease is the answer. coat the terminals in a good coating of grease, that should take care of the prob.
Coating the terminals with vasoline to prevent the acid built up. Especially on the bottom.
get some crc battery terminal cleaner it has acid detector inside use that to clean the battery post and cables if it has an acid leak it will turn pink and you may need to replace the battery, then also get the battery terminal protectant and coat the cables/battery post.
batt is shot and alt is trying to keep charged/repl batt
I understand that you can smear vaseline on and around the battery posts and that will prevent them from corroding. This is an old school remedy. First clean off all the corrosion.
joseph is correct put grease on the terminals
the seals are broke where the cables hook to on the battery.

  • When am I supposed to buy a new battery for my car?

Other than the simple fact that your car won't start... are there any guidelines on replacing the battery? My car seems fine, it's sometimes a little bit slow in starting, but never have I had to try to start it more than once... and my dad checked my oil for me the other day and said, have you ever gotten a new battery? and i was like, um i dont know. I am a woman, and I do take care of my car (regular oil changes, maintenance, and tire rotations/new tires) but I don't know about the battery! I thought the maintenance guys check those things out, but I guess not. I think it was maybe changed when I got in an accident in october 2004, but my dad said it still said Honda battery like from the factory... Well anyways to get to the point (sorry i like to talk) I have 120 thousand miles on the car... is it time for a new battery? ThanksWhen am I supposed to buy a new battery for my car?Wuuuuuuuuuuuuullllllllllll, It's time to get a new battery, when it is time to get a new battery! GEZZE!! Simple as that!

    Love u sis.
When am I supposed to buy a new battery for my car?
i worked at napa auto parts and it is suggested every 4 years
When am I supposed to buy a new battery for my car?
You can have the battery voltage checked at a service station, They will let you know if it should be replaced. BEWARE, if they tell you, %26quot;Hey lady, your battery should be replaced%26quot;, go to sears or a Pep Boys and buy it there. Putting it in is no problem. Bottom line, if you think it needs replacement, replace it.
Drive to an auto parts store like http://www.autozone.com and they will test it and the charging system for free in the parking lot and replace the battery if you need a new one. Most batteries don't last longer than 5 years, and you should get a new one right away if it's that old or you'll get stranded somewhere soon.
Batteries can last for a long time, but not forever. Next time you go in for a maintanance service, just ask the technician to check your battery AND your charging system. That'll give you an up to date report card on your car battery's health. If you find it takes a bit more cranks to turn your car over, get to your mechanic soon. I even think that some of the auto stores, Pep Boys, AutoZone and the like may even offer to give your battery a quick check out for no charge.

    Hope this helps.
I generally wait until the battery dies. But the sometimes do %26quot;start a little slow%26quot;. Yes, a little inconvient when it goes out, but not that big a deal.

There is a life expectancy on the battery and in my experience they are fairly accurate. I just replaced both of mine in my cars. One is an '02 auto and the other is an '00 SUV. Depending on the price you pay for the battery, etc. about 5 years is right.

If you want to be pro-active and replace before it goes out, there should be a sticker on it that says taht shows how many years it should be good for. Oh, and when I replace batteries, I get the higher end batteries so it lasts longer, etc. Don't go cheap. I did that once and regretted it as it went out early.

And most auto parts stores will help you swap it out no problem. Just smile for them.

    Hope that helps a little.
Ideally a battery should be changed about every three years. Miles don't have much effect on battery life. Some batteries are good for four years, and some are good for five. Usually it will say when you buy the battery.

It's best not to let the battery get too weak as this may wear down your starter. (Weak batteries make the starter crank longer and it's the heat that kills 'em.) A bad battery can also wear out your alternator. As the battery is cheaper than the starter (and easier to change) and cheaper than the alternator (and easier to change) it makes sense to change the battery regularly, before it gets too weak to start the car.

Sounds like you're due for a new battery. Check out Sears Die Hard or other good brands and look for a 48-month battery if you want trouble free performance. Also, many batteries have a little sight you can look at to tell how your battery's doing. These can be well worth paying a little extra.
From the sounds if it, you could benefit from a new battery. Some batteries you have to add water to the cells which isn't a hard thing to do but if you have 120,000 miles on it, you've probably had the battery for over 5 years so it might be worth it to just have one installed.

The fee for installation usually isn't that much over the cost of the battery. I had mine done last at a Sears garage. I think it cost me around 70 bucks (I would have done it myself but i was away at school and didn't have the tools on me to actually do it) Most tire places like NTB also do batteries as well as dealers and other mechanics
So your battery is at least 3 years old.

How are the cables are they in good shape and tight on the post. When you drive do you notice your lights dim a little or not. That is one sign that you battery is not good. But it is also a sign that you alternator is no good to.

I would recommend you/father take it to advance auto or auto zone and have them check it out for you.
You use the light bulb theory. When do you change the light bulb? It may say %26quot;2 year bulb%26quot; on the package, but do you change it in 2 years? Nope. You change it when it burns out.

When do you change your battery? If it has a 3 year warranty, that doesn't mean you have to change it at the end of 3 years. If it still works and starts the car, leave it alone. If it doesn't someday, change it.

Ive changed the battery in my second hand car, but now the radio wont work it needs a code?

My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?

I have a Toyota corolla station wagon 1990 and when I start the car it will work for about an hour until the battery is dead. I will recharge the battey the same thing will happen so I put in new the battery and a recondition alternator and the samething thing happens as before.

Is it the alternator not charging the battery? How about running a direct connection from the alternator to the battery? Is that possobile? Is there any device /modulator that it has to pass through before it reaches the battery?

Will a direct connection damage my battery and alternator? The recondition alternator has a 3 prong plug and two of the wires are slightly thicker than the one that was on the old alternator. The connecction I did was the same as the old oneMy car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?check your alternator and battery for loose cables. make sure the terminals on the battery properly secured and not able to slip.

for the alternator, check the cables and make sure each bolt is tightened to it's maximum.
My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?
Check to see if the batt has a dead cell (even though its new) and check if the alt is putting out. If u dont know how to do this or have a tester on hand go to ur local autoparts store and have them test it for you. If its no that u may have a short sumwhere draining ur batt. Also check ur grounds and make sure they are clean that causes probs also.
My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?
Well, I haven't really had much experience with Jap. Cars, but most modern vehicles will have a regulating swich soewhere between the alternator and the redirect cable. Also, Check the cables themselves. A faulty cable could mean that the full current is not getting back to the battery. Anyways, like i said, I am more familiar with American makes, But there should be some similarity.
check the cables for any bare spots. might be grounding out.
sounds like a wiring problem, however, have that alternator checked. new just means new it doesnt necessarily mean good. if it is , in fact, good have a competent mechanic check it out.
i own a repair shop and the alternator is what regulates the voltage also on this one,it sounds like to me you have completely lost the ground wire from the body to the battery, and all its doing is running on battery voltage ,and not allowing the alternator to charge it back up,one thing you said that helped was it does this with both battery's and alternators ,so if i was you id be looking for a bad or loose ground wire from the body to the engine ,they have a lot of ground wires on them, and all of them are needed,i hope you find it,they can be hard to find when their doing this, good luck with it.
Alternator Voltage Regulator is probably bad. You can buy them at auto-part store. This part basically controls the output of the alternator. For example, when the battery is charged the regulator will restricted the amount of amperage from the alternator allowing just enough to keep the car running. Most new vehicle have the regulator built in to the alternator. In your case they are two separate parts.

You can test to see if the alternator is working by disconnecting on of the battery terminals while the car is running, if the alternator and the regulator is good the car should stay running. If it dies the one of them is bad. Sometimes there are problems with recondition parts, so the alternator could still be bad. I don't think it is you battery, if it was the car would not ever die as long as it is running.
The first thing I would try is putting a volt meter on the battery while the car is running. The battery should run just above 12 volts not running and around 13 to 15 running. While the car is running, if it doesnt read 13 to 15 its your alternator. I have purchased new remaned ones that were still bad. I would also check battery connections, broken wires , and ground cable to frame connection.
new does not mean good. replace the alternator
allso check the fuse that goto the battery or retest alt it might be falty diodes or brushes

Changed battery and car wont start now!?

I installed a new battery in my car today/ I did it myself so I know the connectors and such are in place. Now my hazards are flashing and an anit theft light is flashing. There must be some kind of alarm on the car. I am the second owner and I do not have a remote. HELPPPPP! I am a girl so take it easy on me! I have to work in the morning so and TEMP fixes would help!Changed battery and car wont start now!?what kind of car?

try popping off the negative terminal for 30 secs, then reconnect it and try again

    also check your fuses
Changed battery and car wont start now!?
There is no TEMP fix, have it towed to a reputable repair facility so it can be diagnosed by a professional in the morning.
Changed battery and car wont start now!?
check the charge, maybe it's dead. not all new batteries have a full charge.
Might have popped a fuse, b/c if lights are flashing then the battery is set up right. I hate to say it but check all the fuses you can, or call up a friend and have them help you...good luck
I did the same thing. Come to find out it was the starter that had gone bad, not the battery and I couldn't t return the battery ($80 wasted) because once you have installed it they won't take it back.
try and use ur key on the drivers side door and unlock it..that might disable the alarm and allow you to start the car.

the battery was installed fine..and your alarm just sensed that power was cut off so now its in protect mode.
sound like there is an anti-theft device on your car. call the dealership to see if there is a radio code or something to get your car going again.
    jumper cables and another car.
well your problem is the anti- theft. what you will have to do is resetthe system. what you do is put your key in the ignition and pull it back the opposite way than you would to turn the car over and give it a minute or two. then try to start it
search under the dashboard for a toggle switch and move it
It's not the charge. It's not a fuse. You have activated the alarm and the alarm is disabling the vehicle from starting...like it's supposed to.

You have to reset the alarm system. You don't state what the year, make, and model is nor what kind of alarm (factory or aftermarket). That would make it easier to answer your question.

Try this: there are a few common ways alarm systems can be reset. Lock and unlock your driver's door with the key several times. Try doing the passenger door and the trunk/rear hatch as well. Some alarms have a slight variation of this where you turn the key to lock-lock-unlock-unlock. If none of that works, you can try having the vehicle towed. Most alarm systems will disable themselves if sense the vehicle has been lifted at greater than a 35 or so degree angle (being towed).

If it's a factory alarm system...call the dealership and they can probably detail the correct procedure to you over the phone.

When i change my car speakers, can i just take out the radio fuse instead of disconnecting the battery?

im changing the 2 first. which i can see if i lay down in my trunk. When i change my car speakers, can i just take out the radio fuse instead of disconnecting the battery? No, disconnect the battery.
When i change my car speakers, can i just take out the radio fuse instead of disconnecting the battery?
It's not necessary to disconnect the battery, or to remove the radio fuse, to change the speakers. There's no voltage on speaker wiring unless the radio is on.

I know many people say you should disconnect the battery before you do anything with your car's wiring, but if you're just changing speakers, it's really not necessary. This is a case where the risks involved with disconnecting and re-connecting the battery outweigh the risks from doing the work with the battery connected.

I had this problem with my motor, you have make sure the battery is making connection with the contacts.
Sounds obvious but is it the correct battery fitted the right way round, did you clean it before fitting ? sometimes they have a protective film on the contacts, Lastly was it working before you fitted a new battery (if the old battery was not exhausted could be the sensor in the vehicle)
Did you not change it quick enough? in that case you need to reset the key with the car. Am not sure how to do this. Try putting the key in the ignition, lock the door by hand and unlock by the key keeping it in ignition,

Any trouble it will be in the Hayes manual.
It sounds like it will need to be re-programmed. From what I understand, it only takes about 5 minutes at the dealership. Or there are places online where you can order the instructions to do it yourself, if you are so inclined.

I switched polarity on my car battery and now it wont keep a charge what could I have done? I changed the alt.

I used an in home battery charger and couldnt tell which was neg or pos. any how, now the gage on the van shows the battery voltage at 8 and it should be at 14 and after about 10 or 15 minutes it dies. it is a new alternator and a new battery.. can someone give me some ideas of what it could be.I switched polarity on my car battery and now it wont keep a charge what could I have done? I changed the alt.Might have also fried the voltage regulator.
I switched polarity on my car battery and now it wont keep a charge what could I have done? I changed the alt.
get someone to look at it. something got screwed up. you could have shorted out the battery and its no good anymore. Or you could have screwed up the alternator. Its any bodys guess from where I sit.

some one later down the line said to take off the battery cable when the car is running. You cannot do this kinda thing anymore. It will fry the electronics on newer cars.

That was an old test for cars in the 1950's.
I switched polarity on my car battery and now it wont keep a charge what could I have done? I changed the alt.
You shorted the battery out, also happens when they go dead. The only thing to do is buy another battery. The old battery is junk. The only way to tell if you took the alternator with it is to get a new battery install it, and start the vehicle. When it is running take the positive terminal off the battery, and if the car stalls the alternator is junk to.
it is no good now ,it will never hold a charge again
You fried the electrical system. Time to buy a new car. I'm serious; by the time you replace the computers and other polarity-sensitive equipment, you will literally have spent more money than it would cost for a replacement vehicle.
take the battery to Autozone or another parts store. They will test the battery for you for free(they will test your whole car if you can get it up there). You can do that with the alternator too. If the battery is good, have them charge it. Takes about an hour, or you can hook it up to another vehicle like you are jumping it and leave it for a while. It will charge it up, assuming it will even hold a charge. The third think I would check/replace before I started to panic is the voltage reculator. They are cheap and very easy to replace. Then if all else fails, find a way to get it to the store to have them test your electrical system together in the car. If that fails, you have a serious problem.

How to replace a car battery without losing stereo code? help plz?
You Have 2 min out and in before you lose code. turn in radio first to fill capasitors then shut down out and in turn on radio
An adapter that uses a 9 volt battery that plugs into the cigarette lighter socket allows the memory to be saved.

Look to your local auto parts store.
    contact hyundai
You'll need two jumper wires (12 ga) with clips. set the new batt on top of the engine and clip the jumpers (not jumper cables) pos to pos and neg to neg. Now, being careful not to knock off your jumper clips, remove the old bat, put the new one in place and carefully hook up the cables. As long as you don't break the connection you'll be okay.
    sparky 34 is correct.
you need to find a memory saver.it uses a nine volt batt. and plugs into the cig lighter.I got mine from MAC TOOLS but try sears.
it depends on the make of the stereo to begin with, I would check with Hyundai to make sure that a temporary power loss will not affect it. (usually a few seconds during changeover). I had the same problem with my blaupunkt this afternoon as I had to change my battery. The stereo will store all other information, but will need a code to activate.

As far as the Hyundai stereo goes it might not need a code, if it does and it is factory fitted, then you will have to call Hyundai and give them the VIN or whatever they need to locate the right code. Alternatively, there might be a way of jury rigging it with just some temporary wiring, attach just some thin wires to the terminals of the new battery and tie them to the terminal cables of the car so that when the old battery is removed, voltage is at least not interrupted until you can lock the terminal clamps down again and take the temp wires off. This will maintain a constant current and fool the stereo into thinking that it is the same battery and that it wasn't taken out or stolen or anything.

The reason that radios code like that is to prevent theft, they rely on constant current to maintain their memory and to keep the code active. If the current (power) is cut, the radio code is inactive and the radio thinks that it was removed from the car (possibly stolen). That is why.

Ok heres the problem..i wired 4 underdash led lights directly to my car battery?

i put the two wire to the positive and negative and the kit came with a switch. when i went to start the car the battery was dead..after jumping it i drove the car for 10 min, shut it off and it wouldnt start again..i just changed the battery and it is fine...could i have blown out the alternator by hooking the wirees to the battery or just really drained the battery?Ok heres the problem..i wired 4 underdash led lights directly to my car battery?I would try unhooking them, jump start and see if the battery comes back up.

Did you put an in-line fuse in the positive wire close to the battery? If not you have too much wire, not protected by any fuse and could get a dead short and a fire.
Ok heres the problem..i wired 4 underdash led lights directly to my car battery?
You drained the battery. First of all find your fuse block. Then locate a space in the fuse block that is not being used , Make sure it is only hot: meaning there is only power to this space with the key ON. Get a cuircut testor they are very cheap. Run the positive to the fuse block and find a good ground: bare metal not aluminum, steel and make a good ground. If you would like to install the switch, put it in the hot wire where ever you like. Hope this helps.

Can not changing your oil cause the alternator to overcharge the car battery?

There is no relationship from engine oil to an alternator. The voltage regulator inside the alternator has gone bad. Replace the alternator.

good luck. Can not changing your oil cause the alternator to overcharge the car battery? No , not a chance. The voltage regulator, ( probably within the alternator ) is the most likely problem
Can not changing your oil cause the alternator to overcharge the car battery?
Of course, change your oil immediately to fix problem if it is not too late.
Can not changing your oil cause the alternator to overcharge the car battery?
    Hi,

Firstly, there's no relationship between the engine oil and the alternator. Forget about the engine oil change or it's effects on your car's electricals.

Your problem is here: The regulator is not a part of the alternator. It's a separate unit. It's designed to *cut*off* power from the alternator when the battery is fully charged. Your car's regulator is not working. It's broken. That is why it continues to supply power from the alternator to the battery. You need to replace the regulator *not* your battery.

The mechanic who replaced the alternator is either dishonest or a dimwit. He should have told you to replace the regulator *not* the alternator.

    Go, fix this.

Car Key Fob battery change - Do i need to reprogramme it again?

I have a Fiat Bravo 1.2 (2001)...i think the battery went dead months ago and i only just changed it, but it doesn't work, so does it mean i have to reprogramme it? How do i reprogramme it, can i do it myself or do i have to go to a specialist Fiat Garage?

    Thanks.

(I asked this earlier but no answers yet so i asked it again)Car Key Fob battery change - Do i need to reprogramme it again?Hello

Yes you have to re program it

If you have the Owners Manual it will tell you how.

Normally you have a certain amount of time from the time you take out the battery to getting the new one in so you do not have this problem. But you have to change it before the battery looses all power.

Car Key Fob battery change - Do i need to reprogramme it again?
yes it has to go into fiat very few people have the software to re program the keys and they cannot re program one key only there has to be two and they cost 拢135 each that's how much i had to pay for a spare key for my multipla last month if you loose both keys it mega money to repair as you have have a new ecu .
Car Key Fob battery change - Do i need to reprogramme it again?
yes u do have to reprogramme it,you might be able to do it urself have a look on the net and u might find a site that will tell u how to do it,if not then yes u will have to take it to a fiat garage for them to do it.
Ask the question on this web site you might have a better response.

How do I keep my car electrics live whilst I change the battery without losing my radio code?

you can hook up jumper cables to the battery cables. How do I keep my car electrics live whilst I change the battery without losing my radio code?u can buy a 9 volt battery plug in deal thats goes in ur cigertte lighter there like 5 bucks but it uses a 9 volt battery
How do I keep my car electrics live whilst I change the battery without losing my radio code?
I have heard that a 9volt battery will help, I think you make an adapter with a cig lighter plug on one end and 9 volt clip on the other end and plug into cig. lighter socket. I am not 100% sure, cause this is only what I've heard from somewhere. Wait for another answer, before trying mine. I have not tried this myself.
How do I keep my car electrics live whilst I change the battery without losing my radio code?
If you dont have the proper backup tools then you can connect a battery charger or jump leads on to your cars battery leads before you disconnect the battery but be carefull not to touch the positive terminal against anything earthed
If you make up a couple of wires about 2metres long with crocodile clips on both ends, before you remove the leads from the old battery prior to taking it out of the car you can clip one end of each wire to the battery connections and the other ends to the battery terminals themselves (you may need a second person to ensure they stay on when moving the battery), you can then remove the old battery and replace it with the new one, keeping the wires connected to the old battery. Once you are sure you have connected up to the new battery you can remove the crocodile clips from the old one! - job done.
do it the easy way . just leave the engine running
DO NOT - DO NOT - DO NOT - disconnect the battery with the engine running. It will cause a power surge and could blow expensive electronic components.

All you need as described before is a pair of jumper leads. Connect the jumper leads to the battery terminals you are removing and to a second battery along side the car ( pos to pos and neg to neg).

You can now remove the car battery keeping the jumper leads connected to the car terminals.

It is easier to remove battery clamps (retainers) and loosen terminals before connecting jumper leads.

Be very careful that the jumper leads or terminals do not short to ground or each other, wrapping a piece of rag around them would help solve this.

Re fit the new battery and connect terminals before disconnecting the jumper leads

Job done, no loss of codes or memories.
By what ever means - you need to keep power to the radio via the car wireing.
It would be easier just to find the code for your radio........
what you could do is connect the battery charger to the battery leads.tell everyone what you are doing so they don't turn off the switch or electric.but care is needed to not short out on the body work when thebattery leads are disconnected from the battery but still connected to the carger..so a old large cloth placed over the relevant part of the engine and body..to act as an insulator is prudent....remember the cable are a trip hazzard....and keep the doggie away as they will just walk though the cable....how do l know this..lol.
if you put a battery charger onto the leads to the battery this will keep power up
You can use jump leads or a battery pack (like the booster packs ) connect these to the leads before undoing the bolts but be careful not let them touch the body work or together.
