Changing a car battery is one of those tasks, like replacing a tire or changing the oil, that most people can do without professional help. Unlike changing the oil, however, this job does require the use of a few specific tools. Having a good wrench on hand is the most important, as batteries tend to be secured into the engine block using bolts of various size.

You will also want to keep workmen鈥檚 gloves or even latex gloves on hand for the simple reason that most automotive engines are suffused with oil and grease for consistent operation. Finally, grab water and a rag as simple cleaning measures can go a long way toward giving you reliable performance for years to come.

Your first step is to buy a replacement battery that suits your engine鈥檚 specs. Although most people simply read what they have on their existing battery and head to the store, you may get considerable benefit by upgrading to a different chemistry or a battery with more intelligent current management.

Some of the best-selling products in the country now contain built-in hardware you can use in the case of a dead battery, and several are specifically rated for cold weather use and the like.

Open the hood and remove both leads to your car鈥檚 existing battery. You want to disconnect the black lead first, followed by the red, as this order helps prevent electrical shock and a dangerous short circuit. Once the terminals are disconnected, removing the battery requires that you unscrew the bracket holding it in place.

Once again, caution counts here 鈥?although the risk of shock is minimal, you want to avoid making contact with conductive metal engine parts if at all possible. Lift the battery out of the engine by bending with your knees and supporting it from beneath 鈥?car batteries can be astonishingly heavy! Dispose of the discarded battery at your local repair shop.

Installing the new battery is as simple as reversing what you just did. Make sure the cable terminals are clean and unobstructed first, however, as the last thing you want is for a flawless battery to be rendered useless by poor contacts. Water and a stiff brush are usually sufficient to clean these terminals, though in extreme cases you may want to try baking soda or a dedicated battery cleaning solution from your local auto store. Attach the connectors to the new battery, screw the bracket into place, close the hood and try the ignition.|||remove negative

I don%26#039;t know where I got the down thumb from but not all car batteries set out in the open.

Most BMW batteries are under the rear seat, LX body Chrysler%26#039;s are in the trunk, some LH body Dodge Chrysler are in the right fender well and so on.

Changing my car battery?

So I know Postive then negative but when I went to put the negative on it sparked a little bit and kinda scared me. Is that normal and If I touch and I%26#039;m gonna like explode? I just don%26#039;t wanna die trying to change this damn battery.|||ya thats normal, make sure the connections are clean ull be fine.|||Just calm down, the easiest way to calm down is to drink Cambodian Breast Milk.|||The spark is battery discharge. On today%26#039;s vehicles there are always certain accessories that stay %26quot;live%26quot; all the time, such as maybe the clock memory on your radio or even the memory for station presets. No it will not hurt you though.

If you hooked the battery up reverse polarity however, you would notice a very large spark. I%26#039;m talking shooting fire.|||You put the positive on first that is fine then the negative. A small spark indicates current draw and is discharging the battery. This can drain battery even in a few days of sitting. A small draw is normal however during servicing have the mechanic go thru the usual free checks for peace of mind.

Does anyone know how to get the code for a car stereo as mine has changed after i changed the car battery?

my car is a RDS 5000 ford ka 2 and it has a stereo which was there when i bought the car,but after i changed the battery just today the code for the stero has changed by itself, and i can%26#039;t use my stereo no more.Any advice in what i can do? Many Thanks.|||take the stereo out of the dashboard look at all the sides of the body as quite often previous owners have written the code there, also try it under uv light, or it could be in the owner hand book, log etc, phone the previous owner, failing this an auto electician will unlock it for about 拢25|||get a new car *LOL*|||Hi , you will need to remove the stereo and get the serial number it begins with the letter m, then i can give you the code, hope this helps

Could a change of car battery possibly affect AM radio reception?

I had the battery changed on my %26#039;96 Explorer last week, from an Interstate to a Motorcraft. Maybe it%26#039;s my imagination or some other problem but I%26#039;ve noticed a tremendous increase in static while listening to may favorite local AM talk-radio station.

Any possibility that the change of brand could be the cause? Thanks!|||Sometimes a mechanic will forget to re-attach the %26#039;static suppressors%26#039; that are tied into the hot (+) circuit or remove them. This causes the spark sound on an AM radio.

Chances are they were part of the old battery%26#039;s wires, and got tossed. If they are gone, you can pick these up at any auto parts place.

In some vehicles it is simply a capacitor tied between the body of the car and the %26#039;hot side%26#039; of the battery|||i just got new alternator and my radio now sucks...id think battery has no effect but who knows,,,i dont|||It is far more likely that the installation is the problem. Changing out a car battery?

Other than disconnecting the old battery, putting in the new one and re connecting it is there anything I should know/do when I change my battery?

Also, what do you disconnect and than connect first? The postive or negitve?|||You have the steps down perfectly - disconnect and remove old battery, insert and connect new battery - job done.

You can disconnect either one in any order.|||When upon changing the battery turn off all your accessories, turn he key off and keep the doors shut, in other words have everything that has powers turn off by not doing so you could cause a draw that could cause a dangerous spark, clean your terminals and then when you install your new battery always hook neg, first.|||make sure it is secured to the car. Make sure the contacts are clean. make sure the acid gunk is cleaned from connetors.use wire brush. sometimes they give you the little felt rings , use those.

for new batt

connect positive, then negative.|||Ream the inside of the old terminals if they are crusty to ensure a good connection. Make sure your tools only touch one terminal at a time.|||I bought a small device that plugs into the cigarette lighter. The object of that is to keep the readings on the computer and also keep the clock time current and if the radio has a code and is not known, this will keep that code on the radio. You might want to look into this item plus what everyone else said.|||Bring it to the store and they might do it for you plus they%26#039;ll throw your old battery for you.

How often should I change my car battery?

I have a 2000 Toyota Camry and it%26#039;s been acting oddly recently. My headlights randomly won%26#039;t work and the light that indicates the AC is turned on sometimes flashes. Is this because of the car battery? The battery has been changed 3 times in the past 9 years or so.|||It depends on your environment.

Excessive heat or cold will put a strain on a battery.

Luckily it doesn%26#039;t fail all at once.

You will first notice starting problems until it finally won%26#039;t have enough juice to start the engine.

Take it into an auto parts dealer and have it checked periodically.

Changed my car battery and things reset?

i changed my car battery at autozone and i found out that my odometer reset(just the trip A trip B), my radio stations reset themselves, and my front 2 power windows which used to go up by themselves by hitting the switch no longer go up, only down. What happend and what should i do? BY changing the battery should the odometer and radio stations reset???|||Please try letting us know the Make, model, and year your vehicle is. Thank you.|||Yea it happens with newer model cars you might need to back to the dealer to reset your computer|||yes. that is normal. anytimes your battery dies or you change it, everything resets itself. it litke unpluging your alarm clock|||It is pretty common for the odometer and radio stations to reset. That happened in my car, too. No big deal, just set them again.

I have no clue about the windows. You should have a mechanic look at that.|||On some newer cars, you can program the computer in the car to different things, you%26#039;ll haffta check the owner%26#039;s manual about the windows. They might be %26#039;locked%26#039; so kids can%26#039;t hurt themselves playing with the windows. Because it%26#039;s awful coincidental that the windows changed right after the battery was changed.|||Any car, newer or older, if the radio has digital station presets and a digital trip A%26amp;B mileage counter, they will reset when you disconnect a battery.

Your computer(and radio) runs off that battery to keep the info stored(Just like a PC with the internal clock battery). So when you disconnect that battery to change it out, it will have a memory dump, which will in turn reset all %26quot;presets%26quot;. Same thing with cars that have %26quot;user settings%26quot; with seat positions.

As for your windows, is that a factory deal, or did you get an aftermarket window module installed with a security system?

Do you have to remove the passenger side tire before changing a car battery on a 2002 dodge intrepid?

yes, you have to take the tire off, but NOT the passenger tire, its the drivers side tire. at least its the easiest way. you need: phillips screwdriver to remove fender trim, 1/2 inch socket or wrench for the battery hold-down, 5/16%26quot; socket or wrench for the cables and a 3/4%26quot; lug wrench to get the tire off. take the tire off and unscrew the lower black plastic fender trim on the front side of the wheel arch, near the front bumper. you%26#039;ll find the battery hidden behind there.

How often do I need to change car battery or car tyres?

What %26quot;signs%26quot; do i look for that tells me I might need to change them... apart from having a flat or stalled car of course lol.

p/s: I am a total car maintenance newbie|||AS A GENERAL RULE---

Most car batteries are good for from 3-5 years, depending on the quality and the degree of maintenance.

As for the telltale signs of failure, there aren%26#039;t many other than the car begins to crank over a little slow. The only other sign is the car won%26#039;t start in the morning.

There are signs that the mechanic sees, but you won%26#039;t notice it because you aren%26#039;t checking it and probably don%26#039;t have the equipment.

As for tires, those are easier to check.

If you look closely at the tread pattern, at the bottom of the grooves, you will see little raised bars that run across the entire tread. When you can see them clearly, and they are as exposed as the tread, the tires are no longer safe or legal.

These are the %26#039;safety bars%26#039; that are cast into the rubber to identify when they have reached a tread depth less than 2/32%26quot;.

You can also tell it is time when you place a penny with Lincoln%26#039;s head toward the tread. If you can see the top of his head, you have less than 2/32%26quot; remaining.

It is smart to not allow them to get this worn, because this is the absolute minimum tread. It is best to keep at least 4/32%26quot; (1/8%26quot;) tread depth, and then begin to look for sales.

Replace them with the size recommended by the manufacturer, and replace them in matching pairs left to right.

Keep them inflated properly (check the owner%26#039;s manual or the driver%26#039;s door post) for longer tire wear and safety, not to mention the fuel economy.

Hope this clears things up

Good Luck|||I%26#039;m not too sure about car battery, but your tyres needs to be changed when they%26#039;re isn%26#039;t much grip on the tyres, when it%26#039;s been worn down. This takes about 1 year I think. But if you don%26#039;t want to fork out alot of money for new tyres every year, then go to your local garage and buy 2nd hand tyres, then still have grip on them and they%26#039;re cheaper too :D|||Pushing a battery past 5 years is pushing your luck. There may be a date poked out of the decal on the battery.

Tires just need some tread on them.|||car battery - 5 to 6 years if you check the battery and make sure the electrolyte is topped up and the terminals are clean

car tyres - 50,000 to 60,000 km. and you have to make sure that the front wheels are checked and wheel alignment carried out once every 2 to 3 years to prevent uneven wear due to wheel out of alignment

For car battery - if you start to find it hard to start and this is usually the early warning of your battery going flat or worn out.|||first know the road surface you%26#039;re regularly driving. if it is concrete then it tends to wear out you tire faster than asphalt, if you go drive on rough roads then it would tend to shorten battery life batteries have a life span just a bit longer than their warranty period. tires life span is also, determined how often you use your brakes. consider also your tire pressure and wheel balance to achieve maximum usage of your tires.|||Look carefully at the tread of your car tires. Most manufactureres will have an indicator (or marking) on the tire, when it wears down to a certain point. It%26#039;s always best to go to a proffessional.

Batteries can have a life of up to 2 even 3 years. You%26#039;ll need to add distilled water occasionaly. You might want to get a multimeter to measure the volatage that the battery still has.|||Down southern USA heat is hard on tyres tires and battery%26#039;s liquid evaporates. So after you have 50,000km or 25,000 miles you should have tread on the tires checked and replace if tread is 2/32 inch or 1mm Batteries you may notice a different sound or slower than normal cranking of the motor. If you notice it is good get the battery inspected. But what usually happens you turn the key machine gun like clicks or one click and no lights or dim lights.|||A cars battery will vary in the length of life it delivers but generally 3 to 5 years at the outside is a normal life span and unfortunately they often give you little if any warning sign except the day it won,t start. As far as the tires go there are built in tread wear indicators that let you know when the tread is getting down to an unsafe point of wear. These are small bands in between the grooves of the tire tread that when flush with the tire surface indicate that it is time to replace the tires or if you have a tire depth gage less than 2/32 of an inch is getting about time to start looking for new tires.|||Try to find an honest repair shop, where you can have your maintenance done. Get to know them , Oil inspection includes

tire check and battery inspection. There are many factors a new

a big factor Regular inspections at 3000 miles when you have

If the headlights flash on/off when you start your car after you change the battery, is something wrong?

However it can be done at home with a few precautions and some basic hand tools. Remember to disconnect the ground cable first and to re install it last. Make sure all cable connections are clean and free of corrosion before you put the cables back on.|||Very easy. Just remember to clean the terminal clamps.|||Yes, you can do it. Batteries are heavy, and ocuard to remove from the vehicle. Most car batteries are going to be under the hood of the car, very cheap labor to replace. If you happen to have a some chrysler cars, the battery is going to be behind the front fender by the tire. and if you have a european car it could be either in the trunk are, or under the rear seat.|||its not hard to do!, all you do is take the terminals off the battery, then you have a hold down bolt, down at the bottom of the battery, take it off and pull the battery straight out.

Changed car battery and radio does not work in Hyundai Sonata 2001?

I got a new battery for my car and now the radio will turn on and the cd will work but the screen is blank on the radio; I cannot read what radio station I am on or what cd track is playing. Also, I cannot adjust the volume. The volume is low and I cannot make it louder, only turn in all the way off. What happened? My manual doesn%26#039;t say anything about it fixing the radio after a replaced battery. What should I do?

Thanks|||I think you should put security code number in radio. most of cars have alarm system. alarm system will be reset when you replace a new battery. if you have manual book then read that one and follow the process but you should know your own security code number.

cheers|||I would check your fuses, if that%26#039;s not it or you don%26#039;t know how to check them have a mechanically inclined friend look it over.

Changing Car CD Radio - Disconnecting Battery?

I am planning to change my Nissan Almera car radio by replacing it with a Sony CD player. I was wondering that before changing the radio, do I need to disconnect the negative battery or just go ahead and open up my dash panel to do the work?

If i have to disconnect, then I am worried about the pin codes as I do not have any codes with me. Will disconnecting the negative charge erase the pins? If yes, where do I get them from and where do I enter them?

PLease advice. Thanks|||to b on the safe side, yes u want 2 disconnect. even though i hav done without disconnecting many times.....

After changing my car battery my CD player in my 2001 Nissan Pathfinder doesn't work. Any ideas on how to fix

Could have simply blown the fuse inside the radio I had the same problem a couple of year ago and run my self ragged trying to figure it out the whole time it was just a damn fuse.|||well if its straight wired to the battery you might wanta make sure that wire got hooked back up... if not.. check the wire to your radio that has the inline fuse.. may have gotten a power surge when chaning it out and blew that fuse... if that is not the problem, check your actual fuse box... other than that i havnt a clue|||It may be the security device on your radio. Does it ask you for a code? Look at the radio manual for a card that has the code for your radio.

Just be careful if you punch in the wrong code more than 3 or so times you will be locked out of the radio and have to go to the agent to have it unlocked.|||probably the fuse for the radio is not good anymore u just need to replace it. the fuse box should be somewhere in the interior of the car under the dash or on the sides. the box will have all the fuses and it should say what the fuses are for. look for the one that is for the radio. check it and if u see something unusual just replace it.|||If the fuse is OK and the radio is not coded, try to disconnect the battery again (turn off the radio before) and wait for a few minutes then reconnect. May be it just needs to be reset.|||after changing the battery, usually you need to reset the radio system with the radio code which you can found from the owner%26#039;s manual or at the back of the radio. reset the system with the code then your CD player should be fine.

How hard is it to change a car Battery?

The battery in my car died and I don%26#039;t want to have it towed somewhere just so someone else can change the battery. Is it relativeley easy enough for me to do in my parking lot?|||You can definately do it! You%26#039;ll need either the correct size socket or an open-ended adjustable wrench. Pliers work in a pinch...

Disconnect the negative battery cable (the black one), then the positive (red one). Just loosen the bolt that holds the cable down against the battery post, then lift the cable up and off.

Lift the battery out (there may be a screw or two holding it down near the bottom), and set the new one in it%26#039;s place.

While you have the battery out, you may want to take a stiff brush and brush the white/green corrosion off the cable ends.

Make sure you have the new battery facing the same way that the old one was. You don%26#039;t want the wrong cable on the post!

Then reconnect the battery cables in the reverse order (positive - red first, then negative - black).

If there were any screws near the bottom of the battery, make sure you replace those.

Congratulations!|||Great answer!

How do i close the hood of my car after changing a battery?

To open it, i figured out that i had to pull a little lever inside, and then pull a lever on the hood itself while i was opening it.

I tried to just close it but its stuck in that position like it was when i had only pulled the lever on the inside, its loose but its locked at the same time.

anyone know? 07 honda cr-v if that helps. thanks!|||Open it up again, and then slam the hood down.

The reason your hood is in that limbo state is because you did not shut it hard enough.|||reopen the hood then go back inside the car and manually push the release lever to assure it is in the closed position then try to close the hood. Let it drop a bit like from 12 inches or so. this should do it.|||HI

First open it back up and make sure nothing is in the way of it closing.. If there is nothing in the way then go inside the car and make sure the lever in side is all the way back in sometimes they get stuck in the open position.

good luck

tim|||just push down firmly on the front and it should latch on the primary latch. be sure to check on the inside release to see that it hs pushed back to its normal postion (un-released) as it may prevent the hood from latching if the release is stuck in the open position.

What are the precautions to change a car battery?

Dear all,

First of all, how long does a car battery last? Is it climate dependent?

Next, I plan to change the battery myself and I want to know if there%26#039;s any precaution e.g. sequential removal/connecting of battery terminals (like the ones we read when jump starting a dead battery)? What tools do I need? Will a small wrench do?|||A regular car battery usually lasts 3-4 years. It%26#039;s pretty simple to switch out for most vehicles. I would in the very least have a 3/4 ratchet and socket set and a couple of flat head and phillips head screwdrivers.

Beyond however it%26#039;s mounted in the vehicle there are two posts. Just disconnect the negative and the positive and install the new battery.

PAY CLOSE ATTENTION THAT YOU DO NOT TOUCH ONE OF YOUR TOOLS OR ANYTHING METAL TO BOTH THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE TERMINAL ON YOUR BATTERY.|||Dear Julian C,

Car batteries do not have a specific lifespan, but most last from 2 - 5 years. Yes, climate plays a part in their durability. Extreme heat and cold will shorten their life.

Changing a battery is easy. Make sure to not wear metal objects like watches, rings, etc, to avoid any possible short circuit or electric shock. Remove the negative terminal first with a proper sized wrench (10mm is a good start). Consider wearing gloves for protection from battery acid spills. Inspect each battery cable for splitting cases or other damage and replace if needed. Make sure the new battery is secure in the car and not sitting loose, as any jostling or bumping can damage it. Spray on some battery terminal protectant, or coat the terminal in petroleum jelly to prevent corrosion from forming.

That%26#039;s it. Keep the battery warranty handy in case you need to submit a claim.

Regards.|||If your car is 1996 or newer, the first thing you%26#039;ll need is a %26quot;setting saver%26quot; so that you don%26#039;t need to have the radio security code.

1. Get some latex gloves and eye protection.

2. Install setting saver.

3. remove NEGATIVE terminal first. Normally black, but you should be able to follow it to the engine block.

4. remove POSITIVE, normally red. A big cable should go to the starter.

5. take the old battery out. watch your fingers.

6. put new battery in car, fasten the battery hold-down to keep the battery from tipping over and causing a fire.

7. use wire brush to clean terminals and battery posts.

8. Install POSITIVE first, tighten terminal so you can%26#039;t wiggle it.

9. Install NEGATIVE last, tighten also.

10. Put some vaseline or grease on the terminals to reduce corrosion.

11. remove setting saver. Start car.

NOTE: DO NOT ALLOW TOOLS TO TOUCH POSITIVE TERMINAL TO THE CAR, YOU WILL CREATE SPARKS AND COULD CAUSE A FIRE. Eye protection is smart, because under some circumstances, sparks could cause the hydrogen gas generated by a battery to explode.|||A couple weeks of real cold weather annually (30-40 below @ night) usually tells you that a good battery will be reliable about 4 years.

Tools may vary. Match tool to the fastener. Always look away before the 2nd final connection to avoid potential explosion getting in your face.|||Make sure when you are installing it, you put the hot (red) wire in place before the ground (Black). The opposite applies to removing a battery (black gets disconnected first). Also, when installing or uninstalling, keep track of where the ground wire is, you don%26#039;t want it to make contact with the frame and arc unintentionally.

You might need a ratchet with a drive adapter to remove the block holding the battery in place.|||If you are not sure of your battery condition go to auto supply and they will test it free.

Pay attention---remove NEGATIVE battery terminal FIRST.

Quite often a weak battery condition can be caused by dirty battery terminals.

The life of a battery can depend on many conditions including climate.

http://www.ehow.com/how_112575_change-ca鈥?/a>|||Extreme temperature ( hot or cold ) reduce the life of a battery.

A car battery can last a very long time, but in most situations, 3 to 6 years is what you%26#039;ll get.

I would recommend stopping at a Batteries Plus store if you have one near you ( http://www.batteriesplus.com )

They can either replace the battery for you or explain to you how to do it properly. They%26#039;ll also take your old battery for recycling on the stop. It would be a great way to learn how to do that from a professional.... for free.|||climate has alot to do with how long a battier willl last along with the kind you by the cheaper the shourter so get one that is atlest midrage for a longer life exp and make sure your battier is clamped down for the bouncing may be fun with your girl frend is deth for your battier when you change dis coneted the neg first then the possative when reconeting revirs proses and you are done

What is causing my car to jerk after I changed the battery, but the car was working fine before the change?

I recently changed my car battery because my battery kept dying after multiple jumps, and there was nothing else wrong with the car besides the battery before the change, but now my car continually jerks and the rpms are way too high. What do I do to fix it?|||Check your battery cables.|||. The battery has nothing to do with the jerking because the alternator takes over after the car is running. But if your alternator is bad and not giving you full performance it may cause you engine to shut off if the battery is too low to carry the load. By the sound of it I would check the alternator/voltage regulator. They commonly go out and cause you battery troubles by not recharging.|||Not sure how old your car is but most modern computer controlled cars reset the computer when you disconnect the battery. It can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few days for all the parameters to get realigned. Most shops will connect a jumper with a small 12v battery to keep the computer memory active when swapping a battery, thus preventing the reset from happening.

Normally the reset is pretty seamless so I am not too sure about your jerking but it may be related to this. Good luck.

Why won't my car idle after changing battery?

I hooked up cables wrong when I first tried jump starting it-then I bought a new battery and it starts fine but now it won%26#039;t idle. What could have been damaged when I hooked up the cable backwards?|||You may not have done any damage. Often when the computer looses power, as in the case of a dead battery or when it has been disconnected, it looses it%26#039;s %26quot;memory%26quot;. Take the car out and drive it for a while. The computer will %26quot;relearn%26quot; what was lost and the car should begin to operate as normal.|||The only thing I can think of is you have damage to your cars computer.

Get it checked out, it could be the problem.

Possibility of a fuel pressure regulator problem.

Also a faulty Idle Air Control motor (IAC) could cause the problem.|||Bad news--the most likey cause is your car%26#039;s computer, one of its most costly components. Take it to a dealership or someplace else that has the necessary equipment to test it.|||What is the make and model of your car? This can help your answer because newer cars have on board computers to maintain efficiency of the motor . Most likely when the cables where hooked up wrong that something electrical was damage.|||You can get a diagnostics box from a local car parts store for around 20 bucks. Some makes have a blinking light system that checks the cars computer when you insert the master key and turn it on. You can take your car to a garage to do this, but it will generally cost between 100-200$ for the diagnostics. Any box or master key will also come with instructions to read the code that is emitted from your cars computer. I could go on, but that is the easiest and cheapest way to go. Even if you can,t fix it yourself, if the auto shop knows what you need replaced(show them the result of the codes) it will save you money. Chances are the computer code was changed when you did this. Best of Luck to you!!!! One more thing. Try unhooking your battery for about one half to one hour. Your onboard computer may reset to original settings.|||Most car computers have to relearn their default programming for idle speed and shift points after you disconnect the battery. try turning it on and driving for a while, then turn it off, turn back on and drive again for a while....do this several times in a quiet area like a subdivision and the computer should reset itself. Next time you replace the battery, run some leads from another battery or car to your battery cable terminals or junction terminal before you take them off to prevent this from ocurring....some parts stores sell a device that plugs in the cigarette lighter socket and runs off a 9 volt battery for this purpose also. Hopefully, crossing the cables did not damage any electrical component.|||Gday, first check your fuses may have blown one and its a 2 dollar fix, If your car is carby fed, check the cables running back from the battery there probally fried, if so you will have to replace them, Had it happen to a friends magna and my 4b, and that was the prob, not hard to fix if you buy more cable to whatever lenght, cut it back in the car and re wire the new cable in its place re fit the terminals, only attempt it if your confident enough as there may be replaceble parts and so on you can get off the shelf in a shop, as this is a quick fix and will void all warranties and may make it worse if not done properly. if not take it to a elec%26#039;y, but i would check the fuses first. Hope it helps.

On a 2002 Honda civic how do i reprogram the radio after changing the car battery?

well since that car is junk. i would take it and throw it off a 101 story building such as the ifle tower in japan. then go to a junk yard and pick up something good like a 06 scion. they ar so good cuase they have no gauges|||you can if you got the code. if you aint got the code you have to go to a dealer and have them unlock it for you .make sure you getthe code in case you have to do it again|||You need the code that came with the car and enter that in. It%26#039;ll probably be with your paperwork and manual. If not, you%26#039;ll have to take it to the dealer so they can unlock it for you. To program the stations, simply tune it and then hold in the number you want to recall that station until it beeps. Then it is programmed.|||well first of all it should have come with a radio unlock code..if you dont have it go the dealer with proof that its urs...to set the stations you want press fm...search for the stations you want and hold down the individual buttons one at a time at the stations u want..(1-2-3-4-5-6)..u should here a beep noise..than ur set..

Why does my car run different after changing the battery?

I recently changed the battery on my 2002 ford focus and now it runs different. Well, it still feels smooth and sounds fine but the rpm will go all the way to 3,000 before it changes to second and third gear. It also makes a hard change of gears or however you say it. Whenever I change gears it feels hard on the car. What do you think it is? It used to change gears very smoothly before I changed the battery.|||The ECM has been erased and is going threw a relearning phase. give it a few more days.|||Automatic right? Its probably the difference of temperature. The warmer the engine the less efficient it is. It might just be reving higher because of that. Run it cold and see if the performance is still poor.|||When you changed the battery power was removed from the engine control computer. The computer controls the shifting of automatic and by having the power reset appears to have affected the transmission shift points. Call the local Ford dealer and ask them what to do about it.

As Roy above said it might go through a relearning phase.|||What you need to do is remove the battery cables again, leave it for about an hour or so, and hook them back up. what this will do is it will reset the cars computer to it%26#039;s default settings. Now, you will still feel it running rough for about 1000km or 600 miles because the car is resetting the codes in the computer. If it doesn%26#039;t change by 1500km, you should get it in to your mechanic to have a diagnostic done. there could be a wire you knocked off when you changed the battery too......... just check everything out and make sure everything is where it should be. you will be fine.|||Your computer has a memory in it that will be erased if the battery is disconnected, and it takes a while to re learn the stuff so be patient.

It has to learn all the sensors, and how you drive and other stuff, including the altitude where you live and it takes all this information and makes your car run better under those conditions.

On my Merc C180 1998. The infrared key does not close the windows anymore after changing the car battery.?

MERCEDES remote key|||programming, owners manual or service manual ought to explain procedure.|||Hold the remote button down while holding the window up button at the same time for 10 seconds. If the code dosen`t reset you will have to take it to the shop and let them reset it.When you take all power from onboard computer away as when you changed battery, this will cause the trouble you are having.|||change the batteries in key

lock the car with remote hold down for 60 sec

un lock the car until windows open keep button key depressed

lock car keep button depressed until all closed

How to change car battery?

I changed the battery in my car (97 mercury tracer)and when I connect the terminals my car horn continuously blows and wont stop. I dont have any kind of alarm remote(bought car used) and im stuck. I have no idea how to stop it and get my car running again. please help! thanks|||pull wire off horn would be easy and really shouldnt never buy a used car that you have not crank and drove or check for problems so easy to find horn remove wire then crank car|||Some of those cars had a factory alarm system. Try connecting the battery and then using the key lock and unlock the drivers door. This will turn the alarm off it is a factory alarm system.|||are you sure you have the terminals connected to the right diodes? Also, check your fuses...make sure they are all in snug. Did you buy the right voltage? Perhaps you have to much power and your car is getting a power surge, making your horn blow. sorry, it%26#039;s a bit funny :)|||connect alarm after connecting battery|||are you sure i doesn%26#039;t have a factory alarm?did you get the remotes for the doors when you bought the car?unhook the horn for now and if it wont start the you could have a factory alarm and it wont let you start the car with out shutting it off then you will have to call the dealer and get a remote to shut it off.

After changing the car battery the battery gauge still shows that it is low?

my battery was bad and the gauge showed that it was low, in the red area, so i changed it and it still shows the same thing on the gauge|||Possibility one

Bad/Faulty/corroded connections

Possibility Two

Bad alternator|||If you have replaced the battery but not started the engine, the new battery could show low voltage. It may not have been charged for some time before it was sold to you.

If you started the engine, and your gauge still reads low, you will need to check on the alternator%26#039;s function.

Was the low gauge reading the reason you changed the battery, or did you actually have a reason other than that, to change it?

You may have picked on the wrong suspect in the first place.|||get someone to get a voltmeter and put the leads on the battery. If it;s showing 13,5 to 14.5 while running alternator is working, however you did not say if it is an amp meter or volt meter. Try another battery out of another car if you have one, or take it to autozone and have the whole system checked for free.|||The gage is letting you know the alternator is not charging enough voltage back to the battery. If you attach a volt meter to the battery it%26#039;ll show it%26#039;s not charging between 13.5 -14.1 volts with the motor running. If so, you need a re-manufactured alternator.|||Assuming the new battery is ok, (you can have it checked at an auto parts store,) you should check for a short in the electrical system, or the gage may be bad and needs replacing. Good Luck.|||your new battry may be bad or your gauge may be shorting out or going bad|||Sounds like a short to ground to me.

Can changing a different type of battery to a car cause problems?

I have a 1990 pontiac transam sportscar that I have been using with a standard type of battery and working well until now when I have its battery changed by another type.. The battery keeps on discharging by no apparent reason. I have my car checked form 2 car workshops and the y cound find any short circuits or dynamo problems. And both tell me perhaps the problem with the battery. PLs help|||Your battery may have a bad cell .Have it load tested. If bad ,replace.|||brand name should not matter as long as you keep the cold cranking amps equal to what the old battery was.

Also know that if you change the battery that you disconnect the ground cable first (-) not the positive cable (+). Charging circuits in new cars now work off the (-) side of the battery.

Your problem sounds like your battery is not charged all the way up. May try to slow charge it at say two amps for 24 hours see how that works out.

Help... changing the car battery?

My car (Chevrolet Cavalier 2002) is dead and I decided that I%26#039;m going to change the battery myself. I%26#039;ve read how to do it but I have one question. My car has a remote control starter in it and I was wondering if I had to do something different to install the battery? Will the starter work after the change or I have to program it or something? If it will not work tell me what to do step by step to fix it|||look at your battery in the car and label what wires are connected to the positive and what to the negative.

unhook them all

remove the old battery

put in the new battery

hook everything up to where you labeled it.|||It%26#039;ll be fine... just make sure you put all the connecting wires back to where they were|||just change the bettery. If remote start doesn%26#039;t work, which i am sure it will, you will be able to take it to dealership and say- %26quot; it just stopped working!!%26quot;|||Your remote starter simply gets power from the battery.

It doesn%26#039;t program itself to the type or model of the battery.

The starter should not be effected at all by changing out the battery.

As for how to change the care battery... look in the link source I gave. :)|||Why don%26#039;t you change the battery. Then, if you have a problem, come back here.?|||Nothing should be different.|||What I would do is remove the battery ( eather it is a side post or post on the top)take the connectors off and unsally the battery is bolted down,,loosen it up and remove it and do the same thing when you put the battery back in. OR Do something better than that,,,,Go to Auto Zone or any Auto Parts store and usally they will replace the battery if you buy a battery from them.|||no|||just change the battery, the remote start does not have memory that would be lost, unlike ram. make sure to count ALL wires going to + side of battery and replace them ALL.

SAAB 9000 car radio is on the blink since changing the car battery!!!???

I have read it is a security feature, that disables the car radio once the power supply has been tampered with (like in the event of car radio theft) but my radio has not been stolen!!

I have the radio code but can not figure when and how to enter the code so the radio comes back to life.

SAAB experts...HELP!!

The manual is not clear on how to do this, but mostly suggesting dealership visit - surely not!!|||If you have the code available, just enter using the 6 digits for your pre sets, if the code is entered wrong, then hold down the %26quot;Band%26quot; button until it reads %26quot;code in%26quot; again.

You only have three chances to get it right before it locks you out, so if it doesn%26#039;t take after the second try, you will need to either go to the dealer and have them get you the code or remove the radio and call your local SAAB dealer and give them the serial # an PU # and they can usually give you the code right over the phone as your talking to them.

If you get locked out of the radio, you will need to leave the radio on and the ignition switch to the 1st position for a min. 1 hour. It should then say %26quot;Code In%26quot; again. If it is wrong again, it will lock you out on the first try, and leave it on for another hour.

Sometimes if the radio has been replaced the new code will be on the top of the radio.

Your car should have come with radio pullers in your leather pouch, if not, they are the same as Ford radio pullers that can be had from most auto parts stores.

Best of luck to ya.|||Look in the owner%26#039;s manual leather holder. There should be a plastic card (blue maybe), that has a 4 digit code. Enter the code. And yeah, going to the dealer if one is nearby is a great idea if you have lost the code or never had it.

They most certainly should not charge you for this most necessary and easy for them to discover code.

Every time the power is lost, like your battery disconnect, the same thing will happen. So, when you find the code, copy it in a few places.|||I just got 2 points|||Just ENTER the code on the radio buttons.|||* Busdrivi is right. The only reason to see the dealer is if you don%26#039;t have the code. If you do, enter it on the station select buttons (notice no number in the code is greater than the number of station buttons you have - 8 in my case).

Changed Car Battery recently and since then all internal lights in car are not working. Any idea, whats wrong?

I have a 96 Honda Accord LX, recently i changed my car battery from SAMS club. Since then all of my internal car lights are not working. Does anybody has any idea, what could be wrong here? Does I take it back to SAMS club to get the battery replaced?|||definitely a fuse blown. go to your fuse compartment located under dash. and check all fuses. this will help let me know |||Check the fuse for the lights.|||check fuse and check some postive post have a second wire to the the fuse panel

Is there a reset for car alarms after changing the remotes battery?

my son changed batteries for his remote keyless entry and now we cannot get the car to unlock for his %26#039;03 tiburon. is there a reset or something?|||Yes, all alarms have a reset. They also all have different methods and locations to reset. If you have the owners manual, it would be ideal. If not... go to a stereo/alarm installer to reset it for you.|||Check out Keyless ride.com for details dealers will charge you 50-100 just to restet the alarm, when the average person can do it in about 10 seconds

Changing car battery on an audi?

i heard rumors about changing the car battery on the audi resets the deck and it wont turn on unless you have a code for it. i bought my audi used and it didnt come with any of that. is this fact or a myth because im thinking of changing my battery out for an optima. also how difficult is it to change the deck to an after market deck. i also heard rumors that if you do it can mess up your cars electrical and on audi%26#039;s it takes a long time to get the wiring together. can someone please explain and filter whats a myth and what is fact|||Go to a large garage most of them will keep your Electrics alive as battery replaced.A code saver is connect before old battery disconnection.|||It is a fact you%26#039;ll need to re-enter your stereo code, you can have it looked up through the VIN through any local dealer. Or you could use it as an excuse upgrade the whole head unit with something nicer.

How often should you change your car battery and does changing car battery depend on CCA?

i just did an oil change in a honda dealer. my car is hond civic lx 2004. then they told me that my car battery was about 303 CCA and its supposed to be around 400 CCA. so its highly recommended to change it.

1. does changing the car battery depend on CCA?

2. how often should you change the car battery?

3. what will happen if i dont change it?

4. i bought the 5w-30 oil in walmart. they just used like one and a half bottle. i am so confused because the last time i did it, they used like 3 bottles. can that really happen??

sorry if my questions are really stupid. i dont really know much about cars, so..|||CCA%26#039;s are cold cranking amps. Each battery is assigned a certain spec. I am sure with yours at 303, it%26#039;s getting to the point of where it will most likely need replacement in less than 6 months. When you get a new battery make sure you get the same rating battery if the car is stock. As far as your oil, turn the car off and check the stick for proper level.|||Do you live in a warm climate or cold? A old battery will last longer in a warm climate. About the oil what size where the bottles? Generally, most engines will hold 4 to 5 quarts with a filter change.|||I feel sure that your auto requires at least 3 full quarts of oil for normal operation, and a complete oil change--getting rid of the old oil and replacing it with a new supply of oil--should require at least 3 full quarts of new oil. If a filter change is done at the same time, which it SHOULD be done at every oil change, an additional quart of new oil probably will be required to bring the recommended proper level of oil as shown on the dip stick. If you have a friend who knows how to check the oil level in your engine (stopped and preferably rested for a while) have him or her show you how to do it. If you have had a complete oil change along with a filter change quite recently, the oil on the dip stick should look almost as clear and it did coming out of the new bottles. You HAVE seen what new oil looks like coming right out of the bottle, haven%26#039;t you? As for the battery question--there are many things to consider, such as;

1. How old is your battery? Is the original (old as your vehicle-- never been changed)?

2. Does your alternator appear to be working properly, by the ampmeter showing charging moderately on the (+) side of center when accessories such as air conditioning, headlight and tail lights, windshield wipers, etc. are operating and the engine is operating at a moderate or more speed; and the ampmeter goes to the (-) side center when such accessories are operating and the engine is allowed to drop to idleing?

3. Checking under the hood, (you need to have someone with you who knows what he/she is looking for and what to do) is there a lot of corrosive build-up around the two terminals on the top of the battery (white %26amp; sometimes blueish crusty dried soda-looking deposits)? If there is, the terminals and the wires%26#039; connector clamps need, eventually, to be cleaned thoroughly and sprayed with a protective coating (you can find at Wal-Mart automotive) that will greatly slow down the build-up of such deposits again. But before you do that with the old battery. You and your helper friend find someone (if the friend doesn%26#039;t happen to have one) a vlot/amp meter that will check D/C voltages %26amp; amperages. Carefully clean the tops of the two posts on the battery and check to see, with the ignition turned off and the engine not running, what the voltage and amperage readings

across the posts (the positive post should have a (+) sign stenciled into its top and also its the one the RED wire is connected to) are for the battery. If the voltage is a good strong 12 volts and the amperage capacity is a good 50 amps., I believe the batter in its present condition is good--BUT--if the battery is one of the sealed type by which it cannot be inspected for the acid/water level in each of the cells, when put to the task of turning the motor over with the starter several times in succession or for extra-long cranking times, such as in cold weather; it might give out completely when you least expect it and it is the MOST INCONVIENT time. If the battery is 3-4 years old and the voltage and amp. capacity look good but you can%26#039;t examine the water/acid levels in the cells, I think you%26#039;d be wise to get a new one soon. But clean off any corrosion you find around the terminals and wire connector clamps and spray with the protective coating--old or new.|||Why the HELL are thay looking at your battery when it was the oil you wanted changed? Sounds like a ruse to sell batteries to me.|||For the oil, check the stick with the engine off, the end of the stick will tell you if it%26#039;s full of if more oil is needed.

As for the battery, my husband (a mechanic for over 13+ yrs) said that you don%26#039;t need to change it until the battery goes completely dead. It isn%26#039;t going to do anything to ur engine. When it finally goes out the engine will shut off and ur windows (or anything electrical) will not turn on until you replace it. That is it.

He also says that that is the dealer trying to get more money off of you. If your battery goes out, go to ur local autozone and they will check the battery for free. If you still have concerns, I would take it to autozone and have it checked for free. They will tell you exactly what it needs by pluging a machine to ur battery. You can either leave it in the car and drive it over there or u can take the battery out of ur car and take the battery to them. They will check it on or out of the car.

Goodluck :)

Why is there no power in my car after changing my battery?

I was changing the battery on my 87 honda prelude and accidently hooked up the positive wire with the negative outlet on the battery Now the car has no power whatsoever. What is wrong with it and how do i fix it with minimal cost.|||You blew the main fuse!!!|||More and likely you probably fried your battery and if you did that you need to go buy a new one. You can have your battery tested at a part store it will tell you if it is good or bad.|||yes you blew the fuse and might have blew your computer too.|||Yeah you blew the fuse.

Changing Car Battery - Extra Wires?

OK - I%26#039;ve done it - I wanted to show off to the bf that I could change a car battery. I disconnect everything like I%26#039;m supposed to - put in the new battery and connect the neg and the pos terminals. No power. When I looked again - i found 2 exra wires that look like they should attach to some terminal - they are attached to a very large black plastic tube - I think they were connected to the side of the positive terminal (attached between 2 nuts) but I%26#039;m not 100% sure - and I can%26#039;t call for help. so HELP!! Thanks|||yes mam they will connect to the pos cable trust me|||if you have no power like lights or no dash lights when the key is turned on. most likely those wires do go to the positive post.|||i think those wires are attached to each terminal with something like this see a mechanic you can get nasty zap from battery

I remember i changed the oil on my car i had a handful of nuts and bolts left over LOL|||Normally extra wires are connected to the positive (+) side of the battery.

However I believe there are still (mostly older) cars out there which use positive earth instead of negative, in which case the scenario would be switched round.

You did not say the make and model of the car but if it was a negative ground model then attach them to the positive side of the battery terminals.|||You should check the terminal connectors for corrosion and clean them with a knife or sandpaper. The extra wires may be for an accessory that was neveer installed on your particular car.

Can a mistake on battery changing cause electrical problems in a car?

I have Nissan Sentra 2002. I recently had my battery changed. The new battery died after few days. I went back to the shop and they put a new battery. The new battery died again. I went back again to the shop and now they are telling me that my car has electrical problem that drawn the battery down. My car has no problem before I got the battery changed. So I am wondering if a mechanical mistake in changing the battery can cause electrical problem.|||Only if done while battery in car, and still connected to your system.|||hooking up the wrong terminals will cause other problems

because dc current acts that way -- guess the alternator

and/or points got fried|||the alternator gave up. do not go at the same shop.|||YES you have a problem be it a %26quot;drain%26quot; or %26quot;short%26quot; in the system or just the alternator is gone bad ,and the shop that did the diagnosing of the problem should of told you that %26#039;but they are only taking your CASH!!!|||it sounds like the alternator is getting ready to go. call up your local parts store or quick lube. most of them will have free battery and alternator analysis machines|||Sometimes. It is more likely that you have a faulty alternator. They tend to go bad by shutting down when the engine warms up. The result is that when the engine is cold, the battery recharges, When the engine is hot it soesn%26#039;t charge the battery, and eventually stops charging all together.

Another possible cause is a faulty alternator belt. If a belt get glazed, it will slip just enough to keep the alternator light off but wont charge the battery. Most auto parts stores will check the battery, alternator and belt for free|||sounds like your alternator has given up the ghost, go to autozone and have the charging system checked out, the only way they could have done something wrong was to put the negative cable on the positive terminal by mistake and then try to hook up the positive cable to the negative terminal, that would more than likely fry your alternator.|||I had the same problem with my car. It kept dying everytimeI would cut the car off and it turned out to be the battery cables.

I changed them both and no more problems|||Why did the battery need changed to begin with? Chances are they didn%26#039;t hook something up right when it was changed or the problem existed prior to the battery being changed you just didn%26#039;t realize it. See if you have a place that can check the electrical and give you an estimate they will generally tell you what is wrong before you agree to having them fix it and it shouldn%26#039;t cost alot if anything. Good luck!|||Check the date of manufacture on that new battery they just sold you.

New batteries have a shelf life of only 6 months. They need to be used within that time. This is because lead acid batteries are already starting to very slowly lose their charge right after manufacture. After 6 months, the chemicals in the battery start to sulfate (collect a sludge) and some of the battery cells start to die off. At first the battery may still have a charge in it but it will refuse to take a recharge.

Be sure to check if you got a fresh battery off the factory less than 6 months old!|||If the battery terminals were inadvertently hooked up backwards, damage to the alternator may occur. Usually blows the diodes in the alternator. It will not charge with a bad diode.

Changing a battery in my car, the one I have is bigger, is this a problem?

I recently found out that my car battery was dying. I have another good working battery, it%26#039;s just the wrong size. Is it okay to put a larger battery into my car? It fits just fine, but it%26#039;s larger.|||As long as it physically fits, it will be fine. Just be sure the positive battery terminal and the negative battery terminal is in the same position so that you can connect the cables properly. Many people assume that the cables line up all the time. They don%26#039;t. Some batteries have the + and - terminals on opposite sides than other batteries. Reverse the connection and the battery will become a moot point. Your car%26#039;s electrical system will be destroyed.|||As long as it fits it will be fine.|||as long as if doesn%26#039;t hit anything.....especially the hood across the terminals when its closed......u should b fine.......as long as of course the CCA is at least the same or higher than the stock battery....good luck|||As long as they are both 12 volts and the posts don%26#039;t hit anything under the hood, it%26#039;s all good.

I am changing my car battery, but when i plug it in, it start honking do you know how can?

i stop it or what is wrong?|||i%26#039;ll agree with people that say it%26#039;s the alarm. Disconnecting the alarm system [which are sometimes hardwired directly to the battery] may be causing the system to reset as a failsafe against theft. You%26#039;ll probably be ok with using your remote clicker to stop the alarm buzzer. Take it to the alarm place you got it at, or any alarm installation place if the thing persists. They could reset the system.

If you DON%26#039;T have an alarm, then it may be indeed be the horn relay system...that may have been stuck, damaged, or the fuze blew when you removed the battery. Check your fuze box to see if any tripped, then take it to a mechanic to check the horn relay system. In anycase, ask if your vehicle DOES INDEED have an alarm you don%26#039;t know about. It may be that too?!

hope this helped...|||do you have an alarm? if so thats the problem, just connect the battery back and disarm your car alarm and it should stop.|||1) is the horn button stuck?

2) is the horn relay stuck?|||I dont know, and I am not being mean, but that is hilarious! You will laugh about it later.|||It%26#039;s the car security. Try using your remote. Open the driver door sometime that%26#039;ll work.|||they%26#039;er right. the alarm. all the late model cars with alarms reset when the battery is disconnected . the default when the battery is hooked back up is to turn on the alarm. Changing car battery?

So I%26#039;m planning to change my car battery for my 2003 Acura RSX Type-S. I%26#039;ve changed a car battery before so doing it won%26#039;t be an issue. However, i%26#039;m planning to maybe upgrade to a stronger battery..maybe an orbital..or possibly one of those special made ones for car audio ...to see if it%26#039;ll bump some more power to my car audio (i have one subwoofer...nothing crazy)..just curious if by doing so I could possibly damage my car%26#039;s electronics system..and/or should just stick with a factory spec car battery?

BTW anywhere I can check online to see exactly what battery type/rating my car needs? Thank You.

~G|||As long as the battery fits in the holder in the car you will have no problems on that end. A big plus to a larger battery will be more cranking power in cold weather. One thing you will need to look at is the output of your alternator - does it have the capacity to recharge the larger battery IN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME.

A larger battery will not damage your cars electrical wiring.

As for your radio system, you will most likely need an amplifier (or larger amplifier) to drive the speakers. The amplifiers built into MOST car radios is not that powerful.|||getting a bigger battery will not make your sound system %26quot;bump%26quot; any harder. It will just give you the potential to handle and supply your system with such power w/o damaging ur circuits. If you want it to bump harder, you need a bigger amp w/ a capacitor. But keep in mind you might need a more powerful alternator to handle the stress...|||You risk blowing fuses if you go too high, I know guys that get better amps and power conditioners to cure those problems, but if you only have a small wattage sub going this may be too expensive to do.|||A new battery won%26#039;t solve your problem. You need a higher amp output alternator and a new battery if yours is getting old and tired. If you%26#039;ve got some big monster amp. a larger output alternator is absolutely necessary.|||not a chance, ooppsss, was that a spark|||A better battery will let it last longer but will have no effect on the performance. Stick with the one that aint broke.

Want better sound? get a better amp or speakers.|||All car batteries are designed to run on 12v dc so you will not risk blowing fuses. A bigger battery is designed to be used for additional componants such as stereos. You will see no benefit with a larger battery in your situation.

I have the optima red top in my car due to the fact I have several aftermarket componants in my car including fuel pumps, stereo, extra electronics for tuning, etc.|||http://www.optimabatteries.com/audio_ele鈥?/a>|||No problem happen when you change the battery, stronger battery provides more power.|||You can not create energy nor destroy it (Physics 101). A bigger battery will not create energy, period! Is just that will last longer when you run the stereo. If you use more power than the Alternator can provide, you will kill the battery too. Anyway, like the other people said, a higher Amps output alternator will do more than a bigger battery.

Why did sparks fly out when i started changing my car battery?

how can you prevent this from happening? why would it happen?|||Always make sure everything is turned off before you start to do this. That includes doors closed so the interior lights are off.

Eye protection is necessary. There is acid in a battery and explosive gas present. If you generate a spark, the battery could literally explode in your face. I have seen it happen, and the person nearly lost their eyesight.

Always disconnect the negative terminal first. This is the %26quot;grounded%26quot; cable that is attached to the body of the vehicle anyway, so if you happen to touch the body with the wrench while touching the terminal, nothing will happen. If you try and remove the positive terminal first and the wrench touches the body while in contact with the terminal you create a short circuit and sparks will fly!

Always remove the negative first and connect it last. The same holds true when using booster cables. Positive first negative last when connecting and negative first positive last when removing. The only additional thing to remember is you should connect to the %26quot;dead%26quot; battery last. Hope this clarifies things!|||I%26#039;m loving the answers you got already, obviously from those who are not mechanics and have no knowledge of basic electrical circuits.

You took off the positive terminal first, which you shouldn%26#039;t do. As soon as the wrench, now charged positive, touched any metal anywhere on the car, as you said, sparks flew.

Always take off the negative battery terminal first, then when you touch metal parts you%26#039;re already grounded, no sparks, no melted wrench either.

When reinstalling the new battery, positive first, negative last.|||This was probably caused by detaching the positive terminal first and laying it down on the metal parts, thereby completing a short circuit.

Oh, and by the way, oklatom, I am a mechanic. A wrench doesn%26#039;t hold a charge, which will make it spark when you put it down. You obviously don%26#039;t know much about electricity. And who is it that%26#039;s giving everybody thumbs downs ?|||because you touch something medal with the wrench when you was doing it so dont touch any thing medal with your wrench and you wil be fine.. or you hook the wrong wire to the wrong post cant be touching the wire together or have anything touch medal when your working with the battery|||When disconnecting a battery, always remove the earth lead first ( Brown). When reconnecting, always connect the earth lead last.|||you either have something shorted or left on or plugged into cigar lighter socket.also remove negative cable first then the positive.reinstall positive first then negative to reduce this problem.|||dont let the cables touch the car

Car stereo problem after changing car battery?

i recently changed the battery of my Mitsubishi Montero sport...

but afterwords the stereo asked for a code...

which has been lost for a long time...

is there any way to fix the problem without needing the code?

|||most of the times you go to the dealership with the vehicle id. numbers and your id and they can use their puter to get the code. also, you can get rid of the factory stereo and install a nice mp3 player for under 100 american dollars. self install|||No, it is set up to do that to deter theft. You need to go to a Mitsubishi dealer. |||If you have the owners manual usually they have the information on the radio code in there.

I know for hondas they have it on a small business card looking thing.

Otherwise you will have to go to the dealer

Replacing it with an aftermarket one is the only option without the code.

Why do the parking lights keep flashing after changing a car battery?

I recently took my 1997 Subaru Impreza to get a new battery. After they installed the battery, the parking lights flashed, and continued to flash, even after starting, moving, and locking and unlocking the doors. One mechanic suggested to use the remote lock and unlock device. We drove all the way home with the lights flashing, found the little wireless remote to unlock the doors, pressed the button and the flashing stopped. I was just wondering why the car would do that or what its for? Most of the people there said they have never seen it before.|||It was the security system needed to be reset. Very common when battery has been disconnected especially if secyrity was activated when battery failed.|||You were lucky the seller of the battery installed it. My problem was the alarm went off with the lights flashing and stopped only after I finished installing the battery. It%26#039;s just another feature to frustrate the vehicle owner.

I just change the battery of my Lexus 1994 ES 300 car, after changing the battery, the odometer change to 9999?

My car battery dies out, so I replace a new battery on my Lexus 1994 ES 300. After replace the new battery in my car. I turn on the engine and it work properly. But one thing I noticed is that my odometer change 999999999. Does anyone know how to reset it back to original mileage? My original mileage before was 113489.|||My father had a 1992 ES300 from late 1991-1999 and he sold it because the computer blew (and it was kind of slow). The same thing happened to him. His odometer just snapped and simultaneously cut the value of the car in half (from $12,000 to $6000). He sold it to some teenager who didn%26#039;t care about the mileage.

Sorry.|||This is a dealer issue. (If you could reset it yourself many people would) It may or may not be worth the cost to fix it. Your car is 14-15 years old so it really won%26#039;t change the value that much. If you are not going to sell it soon it will not matter. However it is a low mileage vehicle for its age so it would add value to have correct mileage.|||Sounds like you will have to get a new cluster circuit board. It is not common at all for this problem to happen but I have seen this probably 2 times in the 8 years of working for Lexus. Might have been from the sudden surge of power when you connected the battery, no one will ever know why it happened.

How do I get my iPod to work after changing the car battery in my 2006 Toyota Avalon.?

I have an aftermarket iPod system (or whatever you call it) installed in my 2006 Toyota Avalon. I was able to play my iPod using the AM/Satellite button. Ever since the car battery was changed, the button only goes to AM and not to satellite and the system no longer recognizes my iPod.|||Sounds like a computer problem. Take it to the Toyota dealership, they can hook it up to their computer and tell you. It shouldn%26#039;t cost anything, but some will charge to hook it up, it depends on the dealer.

Problems with changing car battery?

Prior to battery change, the car had to be boosted for it to start but otherwise started no problem. Took out old battery which was top mount. Replaced with new battery which is side mount but bought those adapters. Now there is power in that the lights and radio come on but the car won%26#039;t start. Tried boosting it but still nothing. It doesn%26#039;t even try to turn over. It is a 1998 Plymouth Neon. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong? Thanks - could use any suggestions.|||Make sure the new battery is fully charged. (slow charge for 12 hours). Then make sure those adapters are making good contact. If still nothing, have starter checked.|||Corroded connections between battery and stater.........! Wiggle the connection to the stater...at the starter.....I%26#039;ll bet it works.......................!

Good Luck.............!|||Make sure you didn%26#039;t buy too small of a battery in regards to amperage. Make sure the numbers are the same. Assuming they are, I would say that while connecting the new cables/adapters, you%26#039;re not making good contact so tear it apart and start over making sure you have good contact.|||This happened to a couple of older cars of mine, both 1993 cars. Check to see if the terminals are securely on the battery connections. What happened with me is they were on somewhat loosely and only the dash lights would come on, but the car wouldn%26#039;t turn over.

Something that helps with this is sand-papering the actual terminals to improve connection by removing deposits, etc. Since your battery is new I doubt it has much gunk on it but hey, it%26#039;s worth a try.|||check the smaller diameter positive wire that goes from the battery to the starter...some have inline fuses...others are fuseable link ...they show no apperent break but are made to melt inside the insulation...if it%26#039;s a fusealbe link wire that will need to be replaced|||Did you hook up the battery backwards?

Double check!!!|||Sounds like it could be your starter solenoid or even the starter itself. If the solenoid is bad, the battery won%26#039;t pass any current to the starter.

Does the starter solenoid click when you try to start the car? If not, that%26#039;s the part that%26#039;s shot.

You might want to consider replacing the starter at this point along with the solenoid. You%26#039;ve probably got about 100,000 miles on that vehicle? A rebuilt starter is probably ideal for that car.|||make sure to check all connections and make sure they are tight and not caked up with corrosion. there will be a ground that runs from the negative battery cable to the fender(the smaller black wire) make sure it is tight.make sure all your power cables are connected to the adapter or you can just take it back and get the correct battery or it could be a bad starter|||be sure all wire,s,connection,s are clean %26amp; tight.....be sure polarity is correct............didnt accidentially omit 1 wire while connecting positive adapter did you?...........check for power at the main terminal on the starter.......if it,s hot.......try jumping the solonoid......be careful engine may crank........if not.....change the starter.|||The most likely answer is the connection at your starter from the battery....Secondly check the ground wire.

Who is good at changing a car battery?

Last time this happened, I went to a Sears Auto Center to change the battery. I%26#039;m just wondering where else I could go. I admire you if you do it yourself because %26quot;do it yourself%26quot; is not in my dictionary. So where would you bring your car to change the battery? I%26#039;m living in Silicon Valley, California.|||Any full service gas station or service facility should be able to handle it.|||the nice people at wal-mart auto center will install your new battery that you buy from them for free (at least that%26#039;s the way it is in texas) ----- and just ask that they check your car charging system while they are swapping out the battery ... sears is higher priced and usually they charge for installation --- I choose wal-mart because they will honor the warranty at any store that has an auto/shop ---all across the states and they will do so cheerfully|||Change the battery? Its like...obvious on how to do it, if you can%26#039;t change the battery then...wow sorry...|||Auto Zone, Pep Boys, Napa

Basically any car parts store will be able to help you out.

.|||Its not hard, you can find instructions on the net, all you need is a little muscle and some wrenches, Disconnect neg (-) first then pos(+) unbolt clamp 1/2 inch socket pull out put in repeat steps. Good luck. Midas is a good place to go, any oil change shops will do it for you as well.|||changing a battery is very easy have a look and think about it. You just undo the wires off the old battery and put them on the new one the same way. Also many Auto centres will change it for free if you buy the battery off them. Bring it to me my 3 year old son will do it for you. Just be careful that you take the negative wire off first and when putting in on put the positive lead on first.
