Can a car battery die when you are driving?

I have a 2000 Honda Civic that I am only planning on having for a few more months, six months tops.I got my oil changed yesterday, and they told me my battery was very low,it was reading 12.7 volts, %26amp; the little blue light on the battery wasnt shining. There was alot of corrosion on the terminals, so I had them clean them, could that help? The car starts right up for me every time, I never have any problems.Since I am planning on getting a new car within 6 months, I dont want to put any money into my current one, I am basically driving it until it dies, it has 204,000 miles on it.I am hesitant to buy a new battery, because like I said, my car starts right up every time, its not like the engine turns over slowly and barely starts up, it always starts right up, even when it is really cold out. Will I have some warning before it is really ready to die (e.g., barely starts in the morning) or could it just die when I am driving and my car stops working?Any advice appreciated! Can a car battery die when you are driving?HIGHLY UNLIKELY that it woud die while driving! The alternator will continue to provide power when the battery is dead. You will probbly notice a harder and harder time to start the car in colder weather. They don't just drop dead like people.

Don't worry about it. It takes very little power to start your car when warm. 6 months this time of year should be easy to maintain.

My battery has died while I was driving and I have over 200,000 miles on my car too. The battery was weak and was overworking my alternator that was also weak and then yeah... thats all it took.

Can a car battery die when you are driving?
Sure a battery can die when you are driving, if the alternator is broken.
Your battery is unlikely to just %26quot;die%26quot;. Even if it does, as long as your engine is running then you will get home. If the engine stops then %26quot;bump%26quot; start it.

Your voltage is probably low because it is not being charged properly.
if the alternator is bad it could just up and die while driving
There will come a point when the battery can no longer hold a charge. When that happens it comes with no warning. Might as well spend the few bucks to get a new battery. You'd hate to be stranded.
Yes your car battery can die if your alternator is broken. The reason is that when you drive you will be using all of your electrical system still and it will be taking the power directly from the battery. The battery has no way of recharging itself so it in turn eventually runs out of power and you are stuck with a dead car.

Hope this helps. =)
it can die espcialli if de car lights are on for a long time like say when ur like at home n de car is like %26quot;sleeping%26quot; yet de lites are on den ye deres a likely chance it';ll die
If the battery is starting your car fine I dont see any reason to replace it. When your car is running it automatically recharges your battery so you don't have to worry about it dieing at some green light or anything. If it really is starting to go it will give you some warning signs such as not starting your car right away. It sounds like you should be fine for now.
Yes, the battery can die while driving. As long as the alternator is working, you will keep moving. After you stop, it will not start. Bummer. Happen to me. Went to a doctor, came out, dead battery. Car break downs are a pain!!
sounds like an altrenator issue...probably about $150 not including labor
As long as it starts every time, it's not dead. And 12.7 by the way would show a fully charged battery.

State of Charge

State of charge, or conversely, the depth of discharge (DOD) can be determined by measuring the voltage and/or the specific gravity of the acid with a hydrometer. This will NOT tell you how good the battery condition is - only a sustained load test can do that. Voltage on a fully charged battery will read 2.12 to 2.15 volts per cell, or 12.7 volts for a 12 volt battery. At 50% the reading will be 2.03 VPC, and at 0% will be 1.75 VPC or less. Specific gravity will be 1.265 for a fully charged cell, and 1.13 or less for a totally discharged cell. Many batteries are sealed, and hydrometer reading cannot be taken, so you must rely on voltage.
No it wont stop while you r driving because your car only needs it to start. It should be fine for a while.
Cleaning the terminals helps certainly, allowing the alternator to charge right...BUT, if the alternator is going bad, well that's not so good...

Did you mean it was only charging 12.7 volts? While running?

Weak cells in the battery won't hold charge, so if it's starting %26quot;barely%26quot; now, it's only a few days more before it won't start at all.

Do I need to change out my car battery?

I drive a 2002 Honda CR-V with roughly 93k miles on it. Last weekend, I accidentally left a light on in my car overnight, and as a result, I ended up needing to get my car jump-started, as well as reentering the CD/Radio code, and I drove around for at least 10 minutes to get the battery all recharged. However, just yesterday morning, I couldn't start up my car because of the battery again. I checked all around my car to make sure that nothing was on again, but that wasn't the case. After getting jump-started and driving around again, the same thing happened later that evening. I repeated the process, and now today, my car won't start again because of that damn battery. Is my battery unable to keep a charge now? Do I need to change my battery after 90k miles?Do I need to change out my car battery?Ten minutes driving is not enough to recharge the battery fully. Also, if your alternator is bad it won't recharge you battery.

You need to put your battery on an overnight charge and when it is FULLY charged put it in the car and drive to AutoZone or somewhere to get a battery and charging system check.
Do I need to change out my car battery?
It is possible your battery can't hold a charge as well as it used to.

If it's an 8year old battery, that's a pretty good run for a battery. If you get a new battery, all things being equal, you'd get another 8years out of the new battery.

If you are set on trying to save it, get yourself a battery tender/charger instead of trying to charge via the alternator.

This will fully recharge the battery and if it has a desulfator feature, it may refresh the battery's ability to hold charge.

Do I need to change out my car battery?
sounds like the batter. type of stuff happens you're actually not supposed to jump them like that just invest in a little trickle charger. that's what should be done at all times. I've left my lights on to the point where the starter won't engages and the charge comes up over night but i'd say you need a new batter...not just for your car but everything. you just don't have good luck at all...either that or sell that imported crap and get a diesel that's got 2 batteries. then you can leave the lights on longer and not have to jump it...but it's 2x as much to replace.

Can u change a car battery without havin to program your stero again?

If you want to keep your stereo code intact, you will need to keep it supplied with electricity, even though it's switched off.

To do this you need a pair of jump leads, so you can supply the car, by connecting a second battery to the battery cables before disconnecting the old battery. then keep those connections secure until you fit the new battery and actually connect it up properly to the car.

Sounds tricky, but isn't. Just ensure leads don't fall off the car's battery cables during the swap. Can u change a car battery without havin to program your stero again?No...just changed the battery and had to reprogram everything.
Can u change a car battery without havin to program your stero again?
no, once you disconnect the battery you loose all presets and in some new cars you may have to enter in the radios anti-theft code also before you change your battery write down all your presets and settings

I hope some one can help me!!!! i hate driving around with our music!!!I drive a 1995 c280, I changed the car battery %26amp;now when i turn on my car my car stero asks for a code!?? HELP?That is an antitheft mode. Any time the power is disconnected to the radio it will ask for a code before it will function. If you have the radio owners manual there should be a code in there. If not you will need to contact a Mercedes dealer and they should be able to give you the code through the VIN number.

Can a car battery be changed while the car is running and if so how?

You could, but it's a bad idea to disconnect it while the engine is running. The alternator needs a battery connected to work properly. Running it without one could damage the internal circuitry. You also run the risk of getting your hand caught in moving parts. However in some extreme conditions when the engine can't be turned off, here is the correct method. Connect a spare battery to the car using jumper cables. Take care not to knock the clamps off while you install the new battery. Once installed, it is safe to remove the cables. Can a car battery be changed while the car is running and if so how?NEVER attempt this at any time. Way too dangerous. If you need to change the battery...shut the car off and do it the normal and safe way. I assume that it will not start back up....ie bad starter, once you change the battery and that is your reasoning for wanting to change it while it is running? Please don't attempt this. Most auto places will change your battery, free of charge, if you purchase the battery from them. Much safer for you this way since you don't seem to have done this before. If the car won't restart you will be at the shop for them to diagnose it and repair it for you.
Can a car battery be changed while the car is running and if so how?
Yes, the car will run off the alternator.

Disconnect the Neg -, then the Pos +.

Install new battery Pos + first, then Neg -.this will keep the circuit open if you accidentally touch the frame.
Can a car battery be changed while the car is running and if so how?
why would you the alternator is putting charge into battery if it's running just make sure all acc. are turned off
um it can but its not going to do any good the car is going to shut off while changing it....so you might as well shut off the car and change it..
you can but you risk basically shorting out your entire electrical system.
why do you need to leave it running?
    whats the point?

    Yes, Reprogramme :o)

How much will it cost to change your car battery?

well my d-3 battiers cast 450 per and then ive gotr to get some help lifting them up into the battier box that is about 15 feet in the airHow much will it cost to change your car battery?shouldnt be much 50-200 depending on the engine size and car
How much will it cost to change your car battery?
It really depends on the name brand that you buy ,you can find batteries starting around $45.bucks and up to$120 dollars.
How much will it cost to change your car battery?
not more than a couple hundred dollars! its usually around 100 - 150 dollars.. though the powerful ones are around 200 dollars! make sure wen u do buy one, it has atleast 1 yr warranty on it (though its better to buy a battery with about 2-3 yrs warranty on it)
It depends on the shop rate replacing a battery is a simple task you can do your self get a wrench most top mounts are 1/2 inch side mount is 1/4 inch a crescent wrench will work fine be careful not to ground the wrench ie touch any metal if the battery terminals are on top loosen nuts pull negative cable

black first then red positive once both are disconnected some battery have a top mounted hold down screw or a bottom pan bolt remove it then remove the battery put in new battery in put holder bolt back in put red positive cable in first then black negative tighten nuts and your done it will take a mechanic

a whole 5 minutes to do if you have to pay more than 20 bucks your getting ripped off and one of the reasons why they want to know the year of your car is the newer it is the more expensive it is the price to replace any part on a car is determined by the year not by how hard it is if the shop tells you that they are lying to you same with other parts like alternators you be surprised an alternator in a 2009 can fit a car built in 1980 there are only 4 types of them the price of a alternator is based on the year the newer the car the more money you pay if you looked up the parts you replace then cross reference to older cars that it fits you will see a major price difference but the same part number don't be taken for a free ride its a trade secret the newer the car the more you pay for parts and labor

Need to change my car battery or another problem?

I have an 2005 Chevy Cavalier I bought from a private party dealer in September 2008. I do my own maintenance, like oil, filter, and tire changes. Basic stuff.

I never changed the cars battery in the little over a year that I've had it, and I never asked the previous owners if they ever did.

Yesterday I went to drive to work and when I went to unlock my car using the automatic car lock buttons and my car wouldn't unlock. Had to open the car the normal way and when I put the keys in the ignition nothing happened, no clicks, nothing.

I was researching up on why and it could either be a dead battery or a dead starter.

I just want to know what you guys think, if its the starter or the battery, and if it is the battery do you think just a recharge or a jump will work or should I go and buy a brand new one (I think its only, like, 70 bucks for a new one and since a car is pretty essential I won't cry getting a new one, but I would prefer a cheaper route.)Need to change my car battery or another problem?most likely may need a new battery try a jump see what happens
Need to change my car battery or another problem?
first thing is to remove battery cable and clean them and battery post try again jump start it dribe to any shop or parts store ask them to check charging system most places free and only takes a minute thenyou know but good bet battery but stil have it check first no need in buying somehthing you dont need
Need to change my car battery or another problem?
Yes,it could be battery. To eliminate this possibility, first try charging it.If it doesn't take or hold a charge, then see how old it is.Check the purchase date on top,or the shipped date on the side.If none are visible, look for the circle sticker on the side, with a letter and number on it,i.e B7 which indicates it was manufactured in Feb 2007.Most batteries are 5-7 year warranties,so you may be covered.Just locate the agent for the brand.

Yes,it could be starter.First check the wire, from battery to starter and the connection

It could be alternator too.Take it off and have a parts store check it.

It could also be your ignition switch.Check for burnt terminals.
First charge the battery then have it tested, if the car starts with a jump you can rule out the starter. The battery should be load tested not just volt tested. Any good parts store can do this for you. I would suggest that you take a wrench that fits your negative battery cable with you.

Then before you go in to ask them to test your battery and charging system you remove the Negative cable. Their hands stay clean and they see you have an idea.
Not knowing the history of your Chevy and how it's been used the original battery is most likely reached the end of its life, not too bad for a 2005!

It may possibly jump start...but in any event I'd replace it. Lots of options there too as all auto supply stores sell 'em. If you live near a Wal-Mart I'd take a look a their stock. I know, Wal-Mart doesn't enjoy a great reputation with some consumer groups but they have a store close to every citizen in the country and have a no BS return policy. If you're going to keep the car look at their best battery, the MAXX, it's a really good buy. I'm a 66 year old car guy with 5 or 6 vehicles around the ranch now, some nice and a few beaters, so this is a first hand experience thing. BTW, I've just put a MAXX in my '65 F100 (with a fresh rebuilt 410 V8 - a Mercury motor) and it cranks it just fine.

Also, once it's running again let a local auto supply test the entire battery/charging circuit. Good luck with your Chevy....and thanks for buying American.
30 year mech would most likely think it to be the BATTERY more than the starter yes try and jump it this should put en off charge to make the eng turn over and start thus eliminating the starter and yes you can have the batter tested at TOU zone good luck

  • Is it ok for my car battery to stay at a 14 volt charge?

We just change my alternator in my car and before we started we forgot to take off the power to the battery and sparked it a little. SO after getting it in, I started my car and now my battery light comes on. So we tested the voltage and it stays at 14 volts. Is this bad? Is there a way to fix it? what do I fix to get the light to go off?Is it ok for my car battery to stay at a 14 volt charge?Totally normal at 14 volts. If your battery light is still on after the alternator change something is still wrong with the charging circuit.
Is it ok for my car battery to stay at a 14 volt charge?
it should be above 14 volts....regulator drops it to 12 for battery....
Is it ok for my car battery to stay at a 14 volt charge?
around 14v is normal a little spark ain't going to hurt it is the fin wire on alternator
have your battery check by spark your charge system you may have shock a cell in battery.
13 to 14 volts sounds about right. Make sure all your connections are tight on the alternator.....usually there is one small wire on the alternator that runs to the light in the gauge cluster, if the small wire isn't hooked up or has a bad connection or the alt isn't charging, the light will illuminate.
14 volts is normal with the engine running. With the engine off the voltage should drop from 1 to 2 volts depending upon what peripheral circuits are still being powered. I suggest you disconnect the positive terminal and check the open circuit voltage. It should be 12 volts.
There are about ten different ways that light comes on depending on the vehicle model. It could be a bad circuit in the alternator, the body computer or a wire that didn't get hooked back up. Some vehicle computers even store the indication and keep the light on until you reset it.

14 volts is where it should be when it's running. Anywhere between 13.4 and 14.8 would be acceptable.
thats not bad ,, however i don`t know what could be causing your lite to come on if it is charging ,,are you sure all the wires are in the right place ,,

Should I change the battery on my car after 6 years if it still starts?

I have an 2003 Ford Focus with the original battery. Where can I get a decent battery fairly cheap? Everyone wants about $90.Should I change the battery on my car after 6 years if it still starts?Unless you want to go out some cold morning this fall or winter and find a totally dead battery you should change it now. Is $90 dollars spread over a six year period really such a big price? That's only about $15 a year. If you shop around you may find one a few bucks cheaper at Sam's or Walmart one.
Should I change the battery on my car after 6 years if it still starts?
If it still works fine, keep on trucking!

I am still on the stock batteries in my truck and its an 2002.

You could try the auto parts places or walmart.
Should I change the battery on my car after 6 years if it still starts?
ask walmart to run a load test on it. it's free.
If it still starts what wrong? Go to a local shop and get a capacitance test on the battery (much more accurate than a load test) to determine the batteries ability to accept a charge. You get what you pay for...$60 a Wal*Mart.
Definitely. Anything over 3-4 years you are on borowed time. Most batteries(good ones) will be priced in the $90-100 range. I would try a good Interstate battery. They are nationwide and can help in case of warranty when needed as well.
should have been done at 3 year intervals and you are damn lucky it didnt take out the alternator about 450 for that little baby/replacing batterys is a maintenance item you can make it a major repair
90 bucks isnt bad for a battery thatll last 5 yrs,,, but if your wanting cheap you can always goto a junkyard battery,25 bucks, ive done it but your chances of gettin a battery that is just as old as yours is 50/50...Art.. i would swap it if u live in colder climates,,, it may not make it thru winter and u dont wanna be stranded one nite with a dead battery and only to find u forgot your cell at the house,,, not good...Art
I still have the origional delco-remy batteries in my 02 and 03 chevy's.

Can I change the battery for my car with another, even though they're not the same size?
i would use the same size battery just to be safe.
Can I change the battery for my car with another, even though they're not the same size?
I'd try it out and see if it would work, maybe you'd be lucky
    yes
no, u cant use a different size and yes it will damage ur car
The problem is, it will not fit in the space under the hood for the battery. You do not want the battery to fall out! It has to FIT!
Yes if it will fit and the post are on the same side as yours. If your post are on the side and so is the one you were given then you should be in good shape.
as long as it fits, and doesnt short out on the hood or something if it bounces, you will have to secure it,
No probably Not cause any %26quot;damage%26quot; should be completely ok to use as long as it fits where it belongs
no, as long as the voltage is the same
my dad was in the airforce and worked on planes and cars. he was also an auto mechanic for most of his life and still works on cars to this day. He has taught me a lot about cars and i will tell you this....DO NOT use a different size battery. It could cause a lot of damage to the spark plugs because they could have a harder time relaying the message to the engine when you try to start your car. Resulting in your car being unable to start some days. It just is not a good idea whatsoever. If you got the new battery for free, spend the money and get one that actually fits properly. If you bought it somewhere, then return it for the correct size. With ANY piece of equipment in an automobile it is not a good idea to force something to fit that is too small or too big.
size not important. would be nice if you could secure it in place.

    minimum amps important.
Like others said the main thing is to make sure the hood clears the battery and if it is a top post battery you can short out the battery if it hits. Other than that most batteries now use the same hold downs (clamping to the notch in bottom of battery) so that generally isn't a problem. Or if you have to in a pinch you can McGuiver it with a rubber bungee cord but not the cloth ones they rot out very quickly from acid. Other than that if it fits in the tray and is 12V you are good to go.
i have the wrong one in my car right now and it has worked for almost 2 years now

I have a 2000 Honda Civic. Last week the car would not start at all. I changed the battery and nothing. HELP!?
If all your fuses both under the hood and underneath your driver side dashboard look fine, you may just need a small boost of more amps to get things moving. Bring another vehicle next to your car and run it on idle then jumpstart your battery, and see if your car will start up.

Make sure aircon, fans, headlights, alarm system, amplifiers, and anything else that may drain a lot of power is turned off or disabled before starting your car.

If that doesn't help, don't overdo it or your jumper cables may begin to get very hot. Instead, consider borrowing or buying a good battery charger. Even new batteries aren't always guaranteed to be fully charged.

I have another car that I don't use much but often jumpstart to get started and sometimes it doesn't work either but charging the battery after several hours from your home outlet always works like a charm.

Some cars only start well when they have the right battery juiced up to full capacity. Good luck!

my 2003 nissan sentra's battery recently started failing and i'm looking for a place with a good price. i live in riverside, CA, and I know how to change the battery myself, but I just don't know many places that sells car batteries around here. Kragens has some for $80 and $90, but that price seems a bit on the high side, is there any place to find a cheap battery without resorting to really bad brands?Where can I buy a car battery?Just about any good auto parts store will sell you a battery. Outlets like Pep Boys and Kragen have pretty good stuff for decent prices. Sears has a pretty good line of automotive batteries too. Probably the best warranty is offered by Interstate, as you can get an Interstate battery exchanged at any auto parts store that handles them.
Where can I buy a car battery?
Trust me spend tat little bit more when it comes to things like this cus in my own experience cheaper does not last as longer and the fact that you wont have to change the battery again for atleast 2-3 years will make it all the more justifiable!!! Try halfords or ebay!
Where can I buy a car battery?
Suggest walmart is a good place ,their warranty is about as good as anyone's
I like Wal Mart. Good price and warranty,(keep the receipt).
You can try walmart. I have heard good stuff about their EVERSTART MAXX batteries.
about any gas stations sells interstate batteries. check auto zone and advance.

Cleaning up battery acid leak from trunk of car?

my father changed my car battery in march and placed the dead battery in my trunk to dispose of at sams where i bought the new one. me being lazy i never returned it. one day i had to slam on my brakes and i could hear and feel the battery tumble hard. i forgot about it still. last week i finally returned it to sams and found that it leaked on my trunk (suv) carpet but a minor amount. a found a map shriveled, not sure if the acid made the map disinigrate. i used gloves to remove the map so now my trunk is clear. my question now is must i shampoo the carpet? are there any dangers? what do i use to clean the carpet? is it safe to store my pet carriers there, my luggage, etc... or has enough time elapsed that it become unharmful?Cleaning up battery acid leak from trunk of car?wet warn rag with baking soda . ps wear gloves
Cleaning up battery acid leak from trunk of car?
Baking soda and lots of it to neutralize the acid ,but it won't undo any damage that is already done.
Cleaning up battery acid leak from trunk of car?
Use lots of baking soda and then clean the carpet.

If you want to be super safe you can put a cloth or new carpet down on top of where it spilled just in case. I think you could put luggage back there, but keep you pets way (might try to eat the carpet) hope i helped.
Susan by the time you realized all this the carpet was impregnated with the acid (sulfuric) move a place where the acid was and you will see it coming apart. The acid only needs only a short time to do the damage. The map is telling you something. You best bet is to replace the section of carpet. Because anything you put on it even after the baking soda will help it to come apart.
First cover the area with baking soda to neutralize the acid.

    Then shampoo your carpet.

It will be fine after that.
Baking soda. Sprinkle a couple of boxes of baking soda on the carpet. Baking soda is a mild base and should help neutralize the battery acid.
You are a lazy kid! Now you want to know if procrastination will save you? Douse the area with baking soda plus a little water to spread it out. Really you should remove the carpet and shampoo it and clean under it too. The acid can burn your skin and eat your clothes.
The carpet still has a low ph value(it's acidic), so it should be treated with caution. To neutralize all you need to do is sprinkle the area with baking soda, let it go for a few minutes, then gently rub it in. Rubber gloves and safety glasses or goggles should be worn. Use a vacuum to clean up. You should then use some water to be sure the carpet is neutralized. The acid may have soaked through to the metal, you should remove the carpet and treat the area underneath as well. Be careful-although the acid in the battery isn't particularly strong, it can cause minor burns to the skin(just flush with water), damage the eyes(flush with water, get medical help), and eat through your clothes. Rinse anything that comes into contact with the acid before disposing. Once everything is cleaned up, it should be safe for storage.
    Try using Resolve on it

put the key in the iginiton and turn off and on fast 6 times this should re programme the key

no luck try, key in ignition turn to on position and press lock switch / button on and off 6 times

if this fails ,disconnect the red lead to the battery for a couple of minutes, re connect this will reprogramme the whole car and try key again,as above

The hybrid car battery need to change according to certain miles or number of years?

Batteries do not like to be overcharged or completely discharged, overcharging and discharging shortens their life span. But, from 30% to 70% charge batteries last almost indefinitely, the Prius has a sophisticated computer management system to keep the batteries in this %26quot;sweet spot%26quot; so the battery life span is much longer than people previously worried about. Current estimated battery life is minimum of 10 years. The hybrid car battery need to change according to certain miles or number of years?Hybrid batteries are designed to last the lifetime of the car. They're under warranty for 8-10 years, and Priuses used as taxis have over 200,000 miles on the original battery. No Prius battery has been replaced due to old age.
The hybrid car battery need to change according to certain miles or number of years?
years or %26quot;hours of use%26quot; plays a more significant role...
The hybrid car battery need to change according to certain miles or number of years?
How often do hybrid batteries need replacing? Is replacement expensive and disposal an environmental problem?

The hybrid battery packs are designed to last for the lifetime of the vehicle, somewhere between 150,000 and 200,000 miles, probably a whole lot longer. The warranty covers the batteries for between eight and ten years, depending on the car maker.

Battery toxicity is a concern, althoug today's hybrids use NiMH batteries, not the environmentally problematic rechargeable nickel cadmium. %26quot;Nickel metal hydride batteries are benign. They can be fully recycled,%26quot; says Ron Cogan, editor of the Green Car Journal. Toyota and Honda say that they will recycle dead batteries and that disposal will pose no toxic hazards. Toyota puts a phone number on each battery, and they pay a $200 %26quot;bounty%26quot; for each battery to help ensure that it will be properly recycled.

There's no definitive word on replacement costs because they are almost never replaced. According to Toyota, since the Prius first went on sale in 2000, they have not replaced a single battery for wear and tear.
Most of the battery packs, electric motor and transmission are warranted for 8 years or 100,000 miles.

If they have to be changed and they are out of warranty you can expect to pay thousands of dollars.

Changed battery in car, now won't stay running.?

I needed a new battery in my Mitsubishi Galant 1999, it would die when sitting, but after a jump it would run, and idle fine. I brought it to AutoZone, they tested the battery and said it was dead.

They changed the battery, car started up, then sputtered out and dies every time. He told me it had nothing to do with, which I agree with, but any idea what would cause it? Could it have reset something in the computer? The throttle cable runs directly over the battery as well, if the battery got hooked on the cable, could it have messed something up with a good enough tug?

All I have to do is barely touch the gas pedal for the car to stay idling.

Thanks!Changed battery in car, now won't stay running.?Look at the throttle cable where it connects to the throttle lever. The cable could have been pulled out of the clip area. Might have broken the cable insulator at the throttle lever. How long did you drive the car or let it idle? The computer may have to reset itself since you disconnected the power.
Changed battery in car, now won't stay running.?
Water in your tank and gas filter, add water remover, change gas filter, then check the connections at the starter from the battery, may be loose, tighten nuts holding cable to starter

get it checked by somebody that know what they are doing
Have your alternator tested. and check the ground to your battery.

  • My car battery has lot of white powder on top?

I have a Toyota Corolla 2000. I changed nine years old battery last month ( it worked so well for me ), but since I got new battery I found a lot of white powder on battery top, I ask friends some told me it was normal, someone told me it was the sign of bad quality of battery and that white powder is going to damage my car. If someone can tell me who is right, I will very appreciate. Thanks. My car battery has lot of white powder on top? This white powder is corrosion of the lead battery terminals. Over time it makes a loose and bad connection.

This residue is corrosion as a result of sulfuric acid gassing that is released by the battery in heavy discharge and recharge. The sulfuric acid gas given off causes corrosion to

    battery terminals.

You can clean it off with a stiff brush, and neutralize the acidic nature of this powder with a little %26quot;baking soda%26quot; from your kitchen / baking products.

Rinse it with clear water, because you don't want the solution to eat into the metal battery tray below.

Finally, spread a thin layer of vaseline or car grease on the terminals. This will prevent acidic vapors from affecting the terminals in the future.
My car battery has lot of white powder on top?
Whatever it is, it's caused by a leaky battery.

It is either dried battery acid or it is corrosion caused by leaked battery acid. Either way, you need to clean the battery up, clean the terminals up. and then what I do is to spread baking soda on the top of the battery where the white powder used to be.

But if you have a lot of powder, don't do this. Baking soda and battery acid neutralize each other, but the result is hydrogen gas and heat. That's why it's important to clean the battery first. And that's also the reason why it's important not to do it if you are looking at a lot of leakage. I think the last thing you want to do is to start a flash fire . The chances are slim to none, but I don't want to hear about the guy who blew himself up on the advice of some Yahoo post.

But if it's anything like the normal amount of leakage, then periodic cleaning and applying baking soda will keep it from damaging other components like your battery cables.
My car battery has lot of white powder on top?
Check to see if the terminals are tight. If you can move by hand, then remove %26amp; clean. Add a couple of tablespoons of baking soda to a quart of warm water. Place the terminals in the solution %26amp; allow to %26quot;boil%26quot; until boiling recedes. Rinse well with fresh water. Blow dry. They must be completely dry prior to installing. Wipe off the top of the battery %26amp; clean the posts. Apply grease the terminals %26amp; install.

If the posts are tight %26amp; the top of the battery is wet or wet around one of the posts, then it's leaking. Return it to the place of purchase %26amp; exchange.

    禄禄禄
It's not normal, but I don't think it will damage the car either. My car battery had this too. Sounds like leak of battery acid. Is it a dry cell battery? If it isn't, it maybe leaking water and battery acid. Just using some very hot or boiling water to rinse the white powder off and see how you go. If it returns, see your motor mechanic or good car battery retailer you trust.

Hope that helps, if it doesn't, forgive me, I'm a girl lol
everyone is correct. the white powder is a result of the sulfuric acid chemical reaction with moisture and contaminants. since this mixture is comprised mostly of acid, do not touch with skin or get in eyes. seek medical attention if contact occurs. baking soda will help neutralize the acid. kind of like the elementery school experiment with the volcano, vinigar and baking soda....same thing. it bubbles like crazy because it's disinfecting the acid. after the reaction stops, when it stops bubbling, take a garden hose or equivanent and wash it away, hopefully into a clean large container as to not pollute the environment or make a mess on your garage floor. with the new battery in, you can purchase special lubricant to help protect the terminals. you should be good to go for another 9 years
wash it off , it is a poor connection, and is acidic, check the terminals and clean them put on vaseline before tightening up finally.
I would not touch this...this can be highly explosive on impact and should not be disposed by an untrained professional.
that,s battery acid, don,t get any on your clothes or it will eat them up. clean the acid off with water and a brush.
it is corrosion.....sprinkle baking powder on it and watch it bubble...wire brush it and hose it off...GOOD AS NEW!
clean is with a tooth brush, this is normal for most cars though =]

    hope this helps
clean it it off with a old tooth brush and new cables it cheep fix

I need to change my car battery. Help!?

I understand that in some cars things like the immobiliser or electric windows will not work when you replace the battery, or the car will not start. I have a 1996 Mazda 626 glx abs. I need to change my car battery. Help!?
Best going to kwik fit or some where like that. I think you had like 5 mins to change it before it all goes wrong but i'm not too sure so best get to the garage and they'll sort it.
    no, it'll be the same
make sure you know the radio code. and when you swap the battery make sure you leave the window or door open and keys on you.as when you connect it sometimes activates your central locking. otherwise you should be fine
I dont drive but I would have thought as long as you attach the possitive and negative leads to the right terminals there should not be a problem. Its only a big battery, copy the way the old one was connected. If its connected wrong it just wont work!
They wont work while the battery is diconnected,

Just change it. Everything will be ok.
From what I know u should have no problems with Windows or the immobiliser.BUT if you have a keycode Radio you will to in put the code again to make the radio work,if you dont know the code ur a little fooked as the radio wont work after.
    it should be just fine

    just change it
it should be fine. open the windows and disconnect the -ve side of the battery first. this gets rid of the slightest chance of a short circuit through other components.
Call Advance, seriously, I'm not just being a smart a. They will answer the questions about car batteries. If the car is still cranking or if you can have it jumped, take it to them and they will replace the battery when you but the new one.
NO REPLACEING THE BATTERY SOULDNOT CAUSE ANY PROMBLES
DON'T go to kwik fit or Mazda dealer -

    Go to a motor factors,

    e.g.

    Brown Brothers

    I hope this helps.
on such an old car, the only thing with a code will be the stereo...

so, what you can do, is connect another battery, using jump leads from your friends car, (it doesnt need to be running) undo your terminals, and remove them from teh battery ,the jump leads will make the car think its still got a battery attached... (cars are a bit simple like that) replace teh battery, do up the clamps and remove the jump leads..job a good un. and it doesnt cost anything..

two words of caution; observe polatrity, red (positive) to RED, Black, to black..and it may only be 12volts, but a fresh battery has around 2-300 amps.. so much power, shorted to earth, because your jump leads touch accidentally...big flash, leading to bonfires so be careful. and good luck
If the battery is causing the problem, by repacing the battery, the problem should be solved!! Unless the battery is not the problem!! First make sure, it's the battery!
Shop around your local tyre/exhaust outlets for a good price, all decent car batteries have at least a 3 year warranty. They can connect another device across the leads while doing the changeover, which preserves all your codes and settings
you can buy a battery memory save unit that plugs in cigar lighter and maintains all electronic memory by means of a nine volt battery available at all car part shops e.g halfords

When changing a battery in a car is there more to it than getting the right one and hooking it up?

Ever since I changed the battery in my truck, it has been very hard to start after it has been sitting. Once it opens up and starts running I can turn it on and off no problem. I was wondering if maybe I needed to add water to the battery (I remember my dad doing that a long time ago).

I bought the battery at Walmart and didn't know if they did something to make them safer to have in the stores and now I need to undo it to make it work better.

I am planning on taking it to a shop tonight but can't afford to. Please help? When changing a battery in a car is there more to it than getting the right one and hooking it up?Thick oil on a cold morning would cause the motor to turn over slower than normal. But after the truck has ran a few minutes, the oil becomes warm and thinner, so the engine is easier to spin.

Many batteries still take water. Pull the cap(s) off of the top of the battery and look inside each cell. If you find one or more lower than the rest, fill it/them with distilled water (NOT TAP).

You could have a parasitic draw on the battery somewhere in the truck, causing a weak battery. Insert a current meter on either the positive or negative terminal (remember you measure current in line with the circuit). You will most likely see a small amount of draw from the radio (for the clock and memory) but not a large current. If you do, pull fuses one at a time until the large draw disapears, then you know what is draining your battery.

You could have a weak starter, but less likely. Or the battery that you bought is simply weak... Did you buy one with a high cold cranking amp (CCA) rating? Do you live in a cold climate?
When changing a battery in a car is there more to it than getting the right one and hooking it up?
sounds like a weak alternator, a loose connection, or a weak starter...

check the connections first, if you need to, replace or clean the battery terminals (they are pretty cheap)

if that doesn't help, take the vehicle to auto zone to have your alternator and starter tested...good luck...
When changing a battery in a car is there more to it than getting the right one and hooking it up?
yes, disconnect the car Earth wire whilst charging, or you'll cook the regulator, and perhaps more. Your battery is draining thru' a fault in your alternator. some distilled water to restore fluid levels might be a good idea, but is not a cure for this trouble. See auto electrician or get used alternator and recondition it yourself.
Sometimes when you change to new parts, the problems start to go down the line. Like if the battery is new then the first thing I would do is change the terminals + and the - ends and then if that don't work change the positive cable, in a truck it should be the shorter one to the battery. Then start the truck and pull the + side cable off the battery and if it dies your alternator is bad if it stays running your battery is bad.
Depending on the year you may have done a bad thing!!! Some vehicles now require a constant power source. When you change the battery, you need to hookup secondary power temporarily. Don't start or move the vehicle!!! Call your local new car dealer and ask the service manager if yours is one. Loss of power can result in loss of computer memory. Driving/running the car can have unexpected results including destroying the insides of your transmission.
i havent seen a battery that takes water in 25 years,,,loose connection or bad starter
sounds to me like you may have gotten a bad battery. Or something is draining the battery while the car is not in use. I think your alt is fine due to the fact that once it starts it is OK, that tells me the charging system is working. Check cables on both ends, at battery, stater, and engine block( ground) for loose or dirty connections. Also is the battery the right battery for that truck, If you add water make sure it is distilled water. Why did you change the battery in the first place?
Some cars have special code to be re-entered after the battery has been replaced. Check with your dealer.
I just changed my battery . Check the cables first. Could be bad connection . The cables don't cost a lot maybe 15 dollars . Make sure you get some lube for a good connect. If that isn't the problem then it could be alternator . Which cost a lot more. About 100 to 200 bucks multiply by 4 and thats what you pay for the shop to fix . Start small and trouble shoot .

    GOD BLESS
Todays batteries are of the maintenance-free and low-maintenance type so there is no need to add water like we did years ago. You must get the correct battery for your car the BCI group number needs to at least match not be lower. These numbers are on the tops of the battery. Some cars need a higher rating battery than others due to the electrical accessories and options on the car. It is good to have a higher cold cranking amps in a colder environment. It is also possible that you are getting a parasitic load, that is something that stays on while the ignition is off ie- a plugged in car charger that has a led on it or a visor mirror light that stays on. You could also have loose connections or corrison at them, check the battery cables for this and check the ground cable at the chassis ground.

When shd i change the car battery. it is three and half years in service?

amron battery in santro carWhen shd i change the car battery. it is three and half years in service?check the voltage of all cells while the battery is on load . if the voltage is lower then specified voltage for the battery then replace it.

more often then not the battery shop service pers measure voltage when there is no load and say the voltage is proper which is incorrect.

battery voltage should not drop excessively when on load.

maybe not below 1 volt or so of its rated capacity..

to explain if the battery is weak then WITH voltage drop excess current gets drawn and battery goes down very frequently, unless car is driven more frequently and for longer distances in which case you would not come to know that the battery has become weaker.

by the way i have never known of batteries that run more than 4 to 4and half years. though having read the answers above i am quite perplexed, because battery technology was not that advanced 15 or ten years back to make such long life batteries.

better to change before it fails for safety reasons. you do not know where will it fail you. so the moment battery starts asking for charging at the battery shop , time has come to change it in practical terms. otherwise normal driving should suffice to charge the battery.
When shd i change the car battery. it is three and half years in service?
    Simple, when it stops working.

There is no given time to change a battery, take care of it and it takes care of you. I have had a battery last 10 years, the current one is now 5 years old.

Make sure that everything is switched off before starting or turning off the engine, this will prevent the battery draining. In winter when the temps hit the - try a trickle charge over night. Winter is when the battery works the hardest, as everything is used, heated windows, blowers, wipers, lights.. the lot. Turn all these off before starting and off again before stopping.

    Happy motoring

no you need not...amron is a very good battery ...when it stops working or charge doesn't stay for long u need to change or else no need...i am using amron battery for 13 years still it hasn't given me any trouble....only one thing you must not leave the car idle for more than a week.... add mineral water or battery water when the water level is low in the battery

Well I just want to know what performance issues that will occur that will indicate that I need a new battery and performance issues that would indicate that I to change my battery cables...What are signs that I need to replace my battery cables and car battery? The battery is used mainly to start the car, otherwise most, if not all, of the power is coming from the alternator. If you are having trouble starting your car, you might have a battery problem (but keep in mind, if the alternator is going bad, it may not be charging the battery properly.)

If you suspect a bad battery, most places that sell batteries will also test them for you for free. Take your car over and have it checked out. A lot of them can also check your alternator for you, as well.

If the cables look rotted or damaged, ou should change them. Check that the clamps are clean and making good electrical contact wit hthe battery posts. If you don't know what I mean or how to check this, take your car over to your newest car parts store, ask them to check your battery, alternator and battery cables for you. its a blaupunkt its an 96 vw polo aloon i need to know can i get codesCan anyone tell me how to unlock car radio changed battery its aski? There is only two ways to get the code, first check through all the car's manuals that you have for a card with the code number on it. If this is not there then you will need to take the car with your V5 to your local VW garage so they can give you code. They will charge for this around æ‹¢30.00.

    Ja.
Can anyone tell me how to unlock car radio changed battery its aski?
The only way to unlock it is either with the code printed on the special card of pay about a fiver and take it to a specialist audio place and they will hook it up to a machine and de code it for you. It is NOT just a case of pressing a few buttons on the set.
Can anyone tell me how to unlock car radio changed battery its aski?
yes you can pay to have it decoded, but with that year of car get another radio even from a boot fair, though there are cheap new radios about, if your young and you want it as a symbol status try sony but it will cost you!!!
Take the radio out; there should be a white sticker on the back, that's the code. Alternatively you can get the code online using the radio serial number.

You have a completely separate issue. You need to have someone hook it up to a diagnostic machine and they can then see what the exact problem is. Otherwise you will be hunting and replacing parts, like have, and not get the desired result.

You have a drain off of the baterry. Check your grounding to body. Have your alternator checked to see if it is really working. Sometimes you can get a bad one.
My 97 Ford CrownVictoria LX wont keep it's volts after changing the battery and alternator can anyone help?
i don't know if you replaced the battery cables or how old they are, if they are old once you might want to look into that, or at least double check your connections.

You had the battery disconnected for a long enough period that the player thought it was being stolen, and shut down. To get it up and running again, just enter the correct code. If you bought it after market, it will be in the papers you were given when you paid for it. If it's factory, it will be on the card in the manual. In either case, read the procedure for entering the code, and enter it. It will again work.

1997 Toyota Corolla has problem in starting car with new battery.?

I have 1997 Toyota Corolla 4D sedan CE. Three months back, I have changed car battery. Everything was good for about a month. But since for last couple of months, my car has increasingly giving problem in starting. When I turn on the ignition key, nothing happens and there is just a click sound every time I turn the ignition key. The car battery looks okay as I can immediately turn on headlights, wiper blades, car stereo etcs.

Some times I have to turn on ignition repeatedly for about 200 times and then car suddenly starts. This has been for the last couple of months and the problem is getting severe. Initially the car was starting with about 5 ignition key turns but now it is almost taking more than 200 inginition key turns to start.

thank you very much in advance.1997 Toyota Corolla has problem in starting car with new battery.?Must be the starter

Check your ground conections. There should be the one to the motor, and a small one to the frame near the battery.
It could be a bad starter or loose wiring from your ignition switch to the starter.
either the cables are bad and dirty or you are in need of a starter or even a battery..... if your having to charged the battery might think something wrong with the charging system get it started and drive it to a shop and have them check it takes like five minutes

Will my Car battery die if I left the inside light on for almost 2 wks?

I left the inside overhead light on for about 2 wks. Will that drain my battery? I changed the battery a little over 2 yrs ago. THank you. Will my Car battery die if I left the inside light on for almost 2 wks?I'm thinking that it quite likely will, but you'll just need a boost. The battery should be fine once it's charged up again.
Will my Car battery die if I left the inside light on for almost 2 wks?
The battery might die but you can always recharge it when you start the car.
Will my Car battery die if I left the inside light on for almost 2 wks?
Uh yah definantly. Most car battries die within 8 hours of being on. Ive left mine on so often that it now dies within two hours of being left on, and I replaced it only a year ago. So yah, its definantly a dead battery. You will have to get a boost from someone with a booster cable. If you dont know what to do call a towing company, and they will do it for a low fee.
two weeks yes the batter is dead
ya, i am surprised it hasn't died by now, i left my car light on for 2 hours and it died
any %26quot;drain%26quot; of a battery will KILL a battery, but you can reenergize it, here comes the bunny, auto batterys in general last 3-4 years, some may have longer WARRANTY time frames but auto batterys can be easilly recharged at any repair center. call me we'll send a wrecker to do this fror you.
YES, you should recharge the battery with a slow charger for about 1 hour. The reason you should recharge the battery, is to prevent damage to the alternator. Even if the car starts, shut it off and charge the battery! A low battery puts a huge strain on the internal voltage regulator inside the alternator. A new alternator could run about $100.00 to $160.00, so charge the battery for free. AUTO TECH!!! You can pick up a battery charger at a parts store, or at sears, for about $50.00, Then you will never need a tow truck for this problem!!!
OK LISTEN HERE YOU NEED A NEW BATTERY. THAT ONE WILL NOT ---HOLD A CHARGE. DONT EVEN TRY CHARGING IT AND DRIVING THE CAR. IT WILL DIE! I NOW FROM LOTS AND LOTS OF EXPERIENCE.

Honda CRV 2000, factory alarm/ (immobilizer?) keep me from starting car after battery change?

Please advise me quickly. My car is at parking lot of store 10 miles away from my home right now. I own Honda CRV 2000 which came with factory set security alarm. I have lost remove control pads a while ago. I had trouble before when changing battery. Alarm(intermittent horn sound) will goes off and I can't start car. But after battery off and on off bunch times, I was able to.

This time, I was driving on hiway yesterday, and I believe alternator of my CRV is failing, all my power was dimming and finally shut off. I barely managed to get off hiway and park on a store parking lot. My friend came over helped me to take out my battery and took me home. I fully charged up the dead battery on battery charger and went back to start the CRV, but when I connect ed fully charged battery to my CRV, horn goes off (solid monotone sound, not the intermittent alarm sound) and ignition is disabled. It will not crack at all. I am hoping there is some manual process to bypass all alarm system. Why would my car not start after putting the battery backwards?

i put in the battery of my car backwards and then i tried to start it but it rotated then nothing happen and it will not start after changing the battery and putting it in the right way. feed back would be great thanksWhy would my car not start after putting the battery backwards? That probably killed the microcontroller, which is the computer in the car that controls everything from air to fuel mixture, to anti-lock brakes, or any other special features your car has. Your best thing to do would be take it to a mechanic who can test the computer, engine, alternator, and probably everything else under the hood. Most likely it will just be the computer got fried when you put the battery in wrong. Microcontrollers can be very picky to how the electricity is delivered and how much so it would make sense if it killed it. A new computer in your car may cost around 200-500 depending on how many features your car has, and how hard it is to replace.

Hope this helps, and be sure to double check in the future to prevent this from happening again.
Why would my car not start after putting the battery backwards?
    Probably fried the main fuse.

All else should be protected if this is a newer car.
Why would my car not start after putting the battery backwards?
Maybe burned up the solenoid on the starter, a fuse or two or both. Have someone look at it.
    fusible links are gone
you wound the engine too tight backwards. now you must roll it backwards down a hill
your systems are protected by relays, fuses, and switches.these funnel through sensitive diodes, and caps, etc to condition the power.when you reverse polarity, all the above is bypassed causing nasty situations, and direct grounds to the systems.good luck with that.red is +,-is negative.also using an ac welder, always unhook the battery.
It shorted the system, burned starter or fuses. have a good electrician check it. Hope this help!
A battery is a device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy. The basic design of a battery includes two electrodes, an anode (the positive end) and a cathode (the negative end). In between the battery’s two electrodes runs an electrical current caused primarily from a voltage differential between the anode and cathode. The voltage runs through a chemical called an electrolyte (which can be either liquid or solid). This battery consisting of two electrodes is called a voltaic cell.
The first inclination that an electrical pathway from an anode to a cathode within a battery or in this first instance “a frog” occurred in 1786, when Count Luigi Galvani (an Italian anatomist, 1737-1798) found that when the muscles of a dead frog were touched by two pieces of different metals, the muscle tissue twitched.
This led to idea by Count Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta (Feb. 18, 1745- March 5, 1827), an Italian physicist who realized that the twitching was caused by an electrical current that was created by chemicals. Volta’s discovery led to the invention of the chemical battery (also called the voltaic pile) in 1800. His first voltaic piles were made from zinc and silver plates (separated by a cloth) put in a salt water bath. Volta improved the pile, using zinc and copper in a weak sulfuric acid bath and thus invented the first generator of continuous electrical current.
The batteries we use today are simply variations of the early battery or voltaic pile. Today’s battery’s are made up of plates of reactive chemicals separated by barriers, being polarized so all the electrons gather on one side. The side that all the electrons gather on becomes negatively charged, and the other side becomes positively charged. Connecting a device creates a current and the electrons flow through the device to the positive side. At the same time, an electrochemical reaction takes place inside the batteries to replenish the electrons. The effect is a chemical process that creates electrical energy (electrochemical energy).
Now with this backdrop let’s look more closely at one popular battery – the iPAQ Battery 167648 and use this battery as an example of how an electrochemical reaction is occurring inside the battery to create power. Most batteries function in a similar fashion so this example should provide a basic back drop.
You can see a picture of the iPAQ Battery 167648 at: http://www.batteryship.com/htmlos/htmlos…
    The technical specs are:
    ? Polymer Lithium
    ? 3.7 volts
    ? 1600 mAh
? 100% OEM compatible. IPAQ 167648 Battery is guaranteed to meet or exceed OEM specifications.
? Integrated Power Management Circuits - protect against over-voltage and under-voltage conditions and maximizes battery life between charges, minimizes charging times, and improves overall battery life.
These specifications are actually the measurements of some of the technical operations that are taking place inside the iPAQ 167648 Battery while the battery is powered and they quantify the energy that is used to power your iPAQ 167648 Battery.
The iPAQ 167648 Battery is the power source for the iPAQ 167648 PDA. The iPAQ 167648 battery converts chemical energy into electrical energy and that conversion is the basis of the energy formed to power the iPAQ 167648 Battery and device.
Inside the durable casing of the iPAQ 167648 Battery is an internal system design that includes two electrodes, an electrolyte, plates of reactive chemicals, and a dry cell.
Working in concert with each other each of these parts perform a specific function: to create electrical current to power the IPAQ 167648 Battery and device.
Let’s look closely at the internal design of the iPAQ 167648 battery.
The two electrodes contained within the iPAQ 167648 battery are the anode and the cathode. The anode is the positive electrode and it is where oxidation occurs. During oxidation oxygen is added to the electrode which causes the removal of electrons from the specific chemical compound (e.g. lithium). The cathode is where reduction (gain of electrons) takes place. A Redox reaction is one where electrons are gained from an oxidizing source. In the iPAQ 167648 Battery it is in the anode that oxidation occurs to pass electrons to the cathode.
The passing of electrons from the anode to the cathode is passed through an electrolyte. The electrolyte is a gel-like polymer film that does not conduct electricity but allows ion exchange. The dry polymer electrolyte design offers simplifications with respect to fabrication, ruggedness, safety, a razor thin-profile geometry, and enhanced conductivity. The electrolyte is held within a dry cell which is a galvanic electrochemical cell containing the pasty electrolyte.
As electrons pass through the electrolyte we can measure their volume in amperes (Amps) at a rate of one Amp to every 62,000,000,000,000,000,000 electr
You probably blew a fuse controlling something important, like the car's computer or the ignition module.

Check EVERY fuse in the car. You almost certainly blew the alternator fuse.
Depending on the year and make, you may have fried all the electronics.

If you're worried about getting zapped, disconnect the battery. You can still get a jolt even if the ignition is off.
You can get a shock from a car battery if the key is off, but you should not have any problems if you are just changing a headlight. There is no power to the light or the plug if the light switch in the car is in the %26quot;off%26quot; position.
On a regular car (non hybrid) the battery is only 12 volts and at most 30-35 amps. This amount of voltage is pretty much harmless. You might feel a slight tingle from direct contact but you certainly would not get a severe shock unless you were messing with the ignition components which can have 30,000 volts in them when the car is running.

Most wires in a modern car are well insulated and the headlight connections are usually encased in a plastic socket so your exposure will be quite limited.

Car battery Died after oil change?

I went to get an oil change today... and during the oil change, my battery died, and now needs to be replaced. I have not had any problem with the battery previous to this. Is it possible that the person doing the oil change did something that caused the battery to die?Car battery Died after oil change?Probably just a coincidence, but if those lube joint monkeys can find a way to screw something up they will. Probably no way to prove it though and if the battery is over 3 years old the pro-rated value would be negligible.
Car battery Died after oil change?
They are not related. Just a bad coincidence.
Car battery Died after oil change?
Oil change has absolutely nothing to do with the battery or electrical system.

They don't go near the battery. They pull a drain plug from the bottom of the motor. The remove and replace a filter on the bottom of the motor. They remove a cap, usually located on the valve cover, pour in the required amount of oil, and put the cap back on.

    That's it. Nothing electrical involved.

    Just coincidence.
Good Luck on proving it, but a person can kill a battery by just arching it. That is done when u take a wrench and touch one end to the positive side and one end to the negitave side. This also works on killing altanators.
Very unlikely. Batteries fail, usually at the worst of all possible times.

If you fill up with fuel, and have a flat tire, do you assume it's the fault of the filling station? Kind of the same thing.
Car battery's last around 5 years give or take. Maybe it was it's time. What I want to know is how do you know it's dead? Did they need to jump your car after the oil change? Did they leave your car door open with the dome light on for more than 10 Min's.. if yes than your battery is bad. you should be able to leave the dome light on for hours and hours and still be able to start the car. I hope this helped
An oil change has nothing to do with your batteries.
Sometimes one of the cells in a battery will just go dead in an instant. That's probably what happened if you ask me. I can't see how someone could screw something up like that unless they left the key on or something. Either way, go get yourself a durable new battery and eliminate your problem. Good Luck!
It is possible that he/she laid a spanner on the battery ans arced out the battery which would certainly do it not good, but as the other answer have said the two are not connected in any way, look for signs of melting or burning on the old battery if possible, but probably you wont see the old battery.
Yes, yes, yes. If he was reputable, he may have left radio, lights, etc. on and wore down the battery. If the battery is less than 5 years old it is unlikely to die on the spot.

Unreputable? Could have undone a cable, put in an old battery, deliberately shorted it out. Best bet; tell him you will get it replaced later and take it somewhere else and have it checked.

By the way, cars will run with a dead battery; they only start it. The altenator will make the electricity to run everything in the car.

I'd love to hear what you find out.
Car batteries only last for about 5 years. It was probably just a coincidence! Isn't it annoying, but everything always seems to go or need doing at the same time?
they may have done something to your car's battery, most of those oil change places have hacks doing the work but you'll have a hard time proving they are at fault.
if the cars battery was fine before u went their tell them that and say u must have done sothing for the battery to die and they might get an new 1 and change it for free!!!!!!!!!!! cuz they could have done something for it to die just so u would replace it and have to give them more money

How to change my car battery?

    i drive an '01 volvo s60.

I bought the battery and tried to replace it but then I got stuck.

As far as I know, it's not hard at all to replace a battery. unscrew the clamp on top that holds the battery down. Unplug negative side first then the positive side. Then unplug the ventilation hose that goes into my battery. Then the battery should come out. Well, the battery isn't budging. When i lift as hard as i can, the car lifts with it.

Does anyone know what I am suppose to do? I don't want to take it to volvo and pay $150 just to change a battery. How to change my car battery?Just remove the bracket of the battery and loosen the battery terminals and you can get your old battery already and replace it with a new one. Put the terminals back together and the bracket and your fine. Hope this help!
How to change my car battery?
There is a bracket on the side of the battery that has to be removed too. It is held in with a couple screws I believe but it has been a while since I changed a battery in one of those cars. It took me a little while to figure it out my first time too. The bracket is low on the battery too and does not look like it holds it there but it does. It keeps the battery locked in position by keeping it from sliding sideways. Hope I have been helpful.

Should i replace my car battery?

i had my car oil changed at walmart. after that, they recommended me to replace my car battery. well, i haven't changed the battery for like 4 years, but i never really have any problems with starting my car(even right now in the winter, i am living in Minnesota, it's quite cold here), So, my questions are: should i listen them to replace my car battery now? or wait until i meet some battery troubles?

thank you in advanceShould i replace my car battery?OK You got one of the people in the Wal-Mart Service that sounds like they %26quot;May Be a Mechanic%26quot;! What Their looking at is the Age of the Battery and maybe Condition, Read Below:

Battery; If 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 Years Old or looks Swollen (Shorted) on the Sides Replace it. %26quot;General Rule-of-Thumb%26quot; For Battery Replacement. If it's working Fine, IE; Taking and Holding a Charge, you might want to wait for a Reasonable Amount of Time.
Should i replace my car battery?
just clean your battery posts and connections and wait until you actually start having starting problems.

    don't fix whats not broke!
Should i replace my car battery?
50/50 question... if it was 5 years i would say yes but 4? it's a close call
Being that its winter and that your battery is already 4 years old and a certified tire and oil shop is telling you that you may want to change it, it would probably be a good idea just to avoid the trouble and hassle of getting stuck somewhere with a bad battery in the frigid cold.
Depends where would like to get stuck when the battery does give it up, usually it's in the snow cold and in the woods and you need a tow that would wreck my day so change it and keep the old in the trunk fully charged ...
I would wait until I had some slow-cranking when i start the car. Admittedly, four years is the common life span of a car battery.
You can take your car to any large auto parts chain and have them test your battery. They should test for the CCA or ColdCrankingAmps and make sure your battry is putting out enough juice. The average life span for a car battery is about 5 years or so, but I would not reccomend changing it until it dies.

    Change a car battery?

Yesterday(which was a Labour day) I changed a battery in my car, Matrix Toyota. I purchased the battery from Walmart and installed it with spanner, ranch, and some tools by myself.

One of my friends who came from one of foreign countries mentioned about making a hole on the surface for the gas emission from the inside of the battery. He told me I should make a hole somewhere on the surface of the battery and it should be there. Unfortunately I couldn't find any hole.

Have you heard about this? Should I make any hole to prevent an explosion in the future?

I just took out the old battery and put the new one in and wired it.

Anybody can give me advices if you live in united states.

ThanksChange a car battery? All batteries that are sold in the US have vents. They either have caps where you can check the fluid level, or in the case of a sealed battery, there is a vent built in. Do not puncture the battery case, that will void any warranty and is not needed.
    Change a car battery?
Your friend is incorrect; older style batteries had covers for the filler holes, where occasional replacement of water or electrolyte was needed, and were called a vented type of battery. Modern batteries need no refilling and are called sealed, although most have filler covers still. No need to %26quot;vent%26quot; the batt as your friend says; it does it itself
    Change a car battery?
All US batteries today are completely sealed and self-contained. If you punch a hole in it anywhere, you are not only exposing yourself to a dangerous situation, but you will void the warranty!
Your friend's idea was based on conditions way in the past, not in recent times. Modern batteries have everything they need, so you don't have to drill any holes in them. What you did is all you need to do with the battery.
Batteries have a vent already in them. Even maintenance free batteries with no caps on the top. Don't drill a hole in it that's not necessary...........md

You will need the access code, its usually in your handbook if not try trhe dealership (they sometimes make a charge for it)

Nothing will happen until the countdown timer has finshed, though (that sorts out the fuse problem, if the timer is working the fuse is fine)

It does depend on the car make and the radio though, and if you have buttons on the radio, IF you do have buttons AND the number just input them, should work, IF not its a trip to the dealer and ask them to reset it for you (thats what I ended up doing, took 10 minutes, and a fiver)

Is it your car and your radio. Then you must have the code or as Boris says if we knew the model we may be able to help.

In the past there have been many people looking for codes ,and I bet some of them are not been particularly honest, just looking for codes for stolen radios,if your puker ,then good luck
It all depends on the make and model, but there should be a section regarding the radio in the vehicle handbook. If you change the battery you must always reset the stereo with the code.
What make is it?? and while its counting down you can't reset anything in this countdown mode... have you the 4 digit code for it?? e-mail me for help if you want ive just been all through this myself!!!
