How do you change a car battery?
go into the compartment, unhook the negative ( black ) cable then unhook the positive ( red ) cable. then unhook any mounts there may be then take the battery out. all can be done with a metric socket set
How do you change a car battery?
Take the old battery from the car and on it's place put the new battery.
Very Carefully!

Battery Basics 101.

A good battery even though guaranteed for 60 months may in fact have only a 48 month usable life.

Take your car to someplace like SEARS and I use them as an example BECAUSE I know that they can do a Load Test on your battery! IF they determine that your battery does not pass the test, THANK THEM and then go to Wal-Mart as they have the best prices!

IF you are going to change your own battery and do not have the tools, nor the expertise to do the job, have WM do it as it is free with the purchase of the battery.

IF you are doing the job yourself, what are you going to do with the Old Battery! Most states have Environmental Regulations and Disposal fees, and that is why it is best to take it to WM.

IN addition most batteries are LEAD / ACID. That means that a leaking battery or one with a Crack can do YOU extreme harm, especially the Sulfuric Acid in the battery!

IS that enough?

Thanks, RR
first take off the red wire (positive) being careful that it dont touch with the negative wire, once u got them off care fully lift the battery out and place aside.... put in the new battery positive side first (to avoid alot of battery acid later on down the line) turn the car on acc to allow the car to get used to the new battery and after about 5 minutes start the car and it will work.
Straight forward: On the old battery, remove the Red (+) positive lead from the battery. Then remove the Black (-) negative. Then carefully remove the metal frame holding down the battery, usually with fly nuts (wingnuts). Clean the connectors. Place the new battery in the area making sure that the positive end is at the same end as the original was. Replace the securing plate. Connect the Black (-) negative first, make sure it is very tight but be careful as the stud on the battery is made of lead and you could break it. Then connect the Red (+) positive connection and tighten up. Remove all tools. Start the engine.

If you have a radio/cd/tape player with a code, make sure you have the code as it will be wiped as soon as the battery is disconnected. It will have to be reset with the correct code.....
assuming you mean charge and not boost then you need a battery charger . 30 to 100 bucks get one with auto shut off and a booster switch on it .

hook the - black wire to the black -battery post. you may then hook the red + wire clamp to the red positve post +

the charger will have a needle on it and you look at it and see it will show you if it is charging . if it does not move the needle then just wiggle the clamps and perhaps put them on again until the little needle moves.

don't smoke around the battery .ever.

do this in a well ventilated place outside is great . but if you take the battery out and take it in the house don't put it in a closet or some where sparks might fly or there is no ventilation . its not really often that they blow up but once in a while one will so just do what i said and you will be fine.

why was the battery dead?
buy a new battery disconnect the negative wire (black) then the positive(red) loosen the battery bracket for holding the battery in place if you have one then change out the battery replace the wires the same posts you disconnected from the old on and your done
You should loosen or remove any tie-downs which hold the battery in the tray. Disconnect the cable terminals from the old battery's terminals (negative/black first and then positive/red). Remove the old battery. Clean the cable terminals with a wire brush and baking soda and water if they're corroded or dirty. When putting the new battery in, make sure that you hook up the negatve(black) to the negative and the positive(red) to the positive. Make sure that your connections are tightened really well and everything is put back in place. Now start your car with your new battery!!

Note: If you have a car alarm system, make sure that you have your remote handy so you can shut off your alarm once you connect the new battery, or you will be bombarded with alarms, horns, etc right at the source(under the hood).
Disconect the Positive cable without touching your tool to the metal body of the car, because it will spark and could weld the tool right to car and battery. Then disconnect the negative cable. Remove the battery tie down and remove the battery and reinstall the new battery. Reatach the negative cable to the new battery and then the positive.

Usually a parts store like auto zone or advance auto or even Walmart will install it for free if you buy it from them.
First remove the black (negative) cable from the battery. This is done so if you touch the wrench to an engine part you will not get sparks! Then take off the red (positive) cable. If you touch the wrench to an engine part now you will not get sparks or shocked. Remove the battery tie down and remove the battery. Install the replacement battery and secure it with the tie down. Install the red cable and last install the black cable.
dear Brit:

the men replace batteries using one adjustable wrench , one 9/16

and one 1/2 wrenches

remove the two battery terminal the black one is called negative(-) the red one is called positive(+). in the top of the battery beside the poles You will see the (-) and the (+) stamped on

if any metallic bracket remove it ,before attend to remove the battery.
