I agree with most of the answers here, you should test your battery maybe 4 times a year or so and when the voltage begins to dip buy a different battery. I do have a suggestion though, buy an optima battery.

Most batteries are stamped with the life span. Now whether they last the full stamped life is doubtful. Id say change it every 4 years, 3 if you live in an extreme climate. There is also something to be said for the quality of the battery you buy and the life span.
it all depends on the climate, its the opposite of what you would think, if you live in hotter climates, you will need to change much more often, every 3 years to be safe, if you live in colder climates, you can go for up to 6 years, but thats pushin it.

first of all, if your battery goes bad it wouldnt make your check engine light come on.



as for the battery the only way to check it is to use a voltmeter on it. see how much volts and amps its running and how much resistance it has, or best yet, take it to auto zone and they will do this for free.



if its running low because altinator isnt working, here is an easy test.

first, start the car, while its running, unhook the positive wire from the battery. if it dies rite away, then your alternator is gone, and this is why your battery is going down. this means your car is running off the battery alone, and after it drains the battery, the car stalls.



if it stays running, alternator is fine and its just the battery.

Try taking the battery terminals off your battery for about 5 minutes. this might reset the brain that controls the gauge.

Sounds like it is time to replace the battery. Buy a quality battery. It will last a lot longer than a generic or Wal Mart battery.
it is probably the battery. if it was the starter you wouldn't hear the clicking.
get new battery and clean the cables.
replace battery first (it might have some juice but not eno cranking amps to actually start the engine)

if that doesnt do it replace starter.
Undo the cables on the battery and clean them. Make sure there is no corrosion. Even if there is none clean them with a wire brush. retighten the cables and start the car. If that doesnt work have auto zone or someone check the battery to make sure it is good or put a new one. If that doesnt work check ur alternator.

if you can reach the starter, take something like a small hammer and tap on the starter, they stick sometimes, also check the battery terminals to make sure they are clean and tight.
try tightening the battery terminal first, if it doesn't do the job get a new battery.
just wiggle your cables and try if that doesnt help your battery is dead sir.



this is a quick 50 dollars gone but if you need it now you can jump it. just doesnt run off that it for long will ruin your alternator. pump a lot of the times it will charge after your jump it so if it starts after like 30 minutes of running it you probably dont need a battery

it sounds like the battery, but there is one other thing that can do that. If you have a manual transmission, try getting the car rolling and putting it in gear.

The purpose is to kind of jar things around. Sometimes (I ahve only seen it twice in my life) the starter gets in a bad position, and it wont do anything. Get stuff moved around, and it works fine.

But, most likely, it is your battery. Not quite dead, but not enough juice to get the car started.

After changing starter, my car acts as if there is no battery.?

Two days ago the car had trouble starting.. I'd turn the key and there would just be a clicking noise. After a few turns the car would start and be perfectly normal. Then, today, it wouldn't start at all... Same clicking noise but wouldn't start at all. So, I bought a new starter, installed it exactly how the old one was installed. I don't know if this matters but I initially forgot to unhook the battery before I installed the new starter and I did get a bit of a shock.. but I quickly got up and unhooked it then finished the job.



When I got back in, thinking everything would be fine... I turn the key and nothing! No lights, no noises... As if there was no battery hooked up at all. The battery is a brand new red-top, there's no way that it's dead. I took it down off the jack-stands and tried to start it again and it started with two tries. I let it sit for a few minutes then shut it off and tried to start it again and now.... it's back to no power at all.



Any ideas?

when you forgot to disconnect the battery and you got a spark, more than likely you blew a fuse, or many. look through both fuse boxes and see if you can find a blown fuse and replace any that are bad. i had this happen to me when i was replacing my ignition switch. i blew a 40 amp fuse and had the same results. Are you sure you didn't pop 1 of the 2 ign 30A fuses? There are usually two power cables going to the battery lead that hooks to the starter, are you sure you haven't left one off by accident?

Normally the electronic door key will reset it when you open the car, if your key fob does not work you may have to get a garage to reset it

The battery of my car was almost dead and i tried to charge it with a jump cable(by connecting it to other car's battery).But by mistake i connected wrong terminals on batteries which heated up jump cable giving a spark and some fumes.

Then,i changed terminals but now battery is not getting any charge even after 5 minutes.I want to know what consequences could be there of connecting wrong terminals when charging?and when i try to start it with self it gives a sound in engine but doesnt start.

At the very least, you probably fried the battery. That's no big deal because it was already shot anyway, right? Your Engine control module might be blown, too. That's big bucks! Good luck.

I believe my car battery died. It started when my radio went wild, and I figured when I shut my car off it wouldn't start back up. I was able to jump and take very long drives with it 3 times, but right before getting my battery changed, it also died on me when i was driving very slow around a turn, but it also seemed like it was chugging for gas/power or something. Also the dash lights, and meters started to twitch and click uncontrollably, for about 5 minutes. I was still able to jump it after that.



Changed the battery, and the car started up fine, but the battery light is still on, and now the check engine light is on. what were all of your gauges reading?... could be the alternator... although if it was the alternator you generally know when you try to start it.. very few cars die on the road cause of an alternator... that sounds like a bad ground somewhere... but thats your best bet
I'd check the alternator first.
Probably a bad Alternator but you should make sure all the wires are tightly connected to the battery and not corroded. Sometimes it's just a poor connection.

The battery could have a manufacturers defect and so it's still possible your new battery is bad. Aside from which other causes could be a bad connection to your battery or to your ignition wiring. It could also be your ignition switch on the steering column. Or it could be your alternator, voltage regulator, other electrical connections like the cables going to your alternator and even to your starter motor or starter solenoid.



Make sure there is no corrosion on the wiring at all and that all electrical contacts are tight and clean.

In older vehicles that used carburetors and did not have computer controls removing the battery was fine, but it's generally not recommended for modern cars.

the alternator is providing power...not a good idea..you may have 14 v running in electronics built for 12.
When the car is running ,it runs off the altinator not the battery.

So as long as your altinator is good It will stay running.
I would have thought the car would continue running? The battery is used to start the car, but once it is running, then the alternator is charging the battery and running all the car's electrics.



The battery being disconnected will prevent it from charging, but the whole bodywork will still act as the negative, as it is connected to the negative of the battery charging network.



I'm glad you brought this up, as I missed the original question and it would have made me think I was missing something as I would not have agreed with the answer...
The reason is that as you have started your car and the battery simultaneously has charged the electromagnets in the alternator that create the magnetic fields in the alternator it is then able to energise itself and keep the power going, by the way many, if not most modern alternators have voltage regulators build in, if yours don`t you may damage things by running too high a voltage.

Old type generators with permanent magnets did not need a battery to supply power before they were able to produce electricity.

Now in your case you may also get some problems with your cars electronic`s if you switch your engine off while the battery is disconnected, but you have most likely figured that out by now.
Not good to do that, can damage electronics. The battery acts like a giant capacitor to dampen voltage spikes generated by the alternator.

One tip I will offer if you have more than one remote for the vehical you must do them both at the same time. If you do not the second one will not work. Make sure that all of your cnnections are right, you might have missed a connector to the battery. If not check the fuses there might be one that has blown, if not you will have to take to a dealer or security system expert

ok, make sure you have all the remotes for the vehicle with you.... turn the key off, and on the outside,punch in your 5 digit code for the keyless entry code (if you don't know the code,look in the trunk on the right side hinge support, it should be on a small sticker) then press the 1/2 button, then the lock button on each transmitter one after the other, the locks should cycle after each remote......

Class the battery in the modern car isnt that different from the battery in the early cars. the sizes have changed to accomodate space issues and the voltage has changed from 6 volts to 12.

all batterys have as we all know a plus or posative and a minus or negative post. some are larger post type as used in all earlier cars and some use stud or screw in connecters. both serving the same purpose.

inside the battery there pockets or chanbers. each chanber creates its portion of the CCA design of the battery. CCA being the %26quot;cold cranking amps%26quot; depending on the manufactures specifications CCA numbers can be from 500 to 1200 cca.

here is where we must recognise the difference. cca's are what are needed critically to start an engine. the engine needs a big chunk of them just to get all 4 to 8 and more cylinders to spin in the best of conditions.

with age the chambers od the battery or cells start to look a bit like the hull of an old ship wreck. rusted debrit dropping to the floor and forming a bridge between the cells. once sucsessfully bridged accross the cell shorts out because every other cell is the same polarity meaning posative is next to negative is next to posative etc. each shorted cell kills off cca,s though theoretically the battery could charge up and show a 12 volt surface charge it may only have achieved 300 CCA,a of power to use.

also the damaged cells will drop off quickly the 12 volts that the good ones held.

to achieve power elecricity requires a posative AND a negative. your alternator represents that battery changer! if only one cablw wont recharge the battery using the home charger than only one wont on the alternator. the alternator may be being fooled by restrictions of power flow through tired cables and ends , dirt rust and corrotion into stopping the flow to the battery to replenish its use after starting.

Car batteries will normally last 4 to 5 years if the charging system is in good shape. Yours is around 6, so you should expect it to fail before too much longer

Maybe you are sitting on the button while I drive and killig the battery. Or maybe the battery itself just won't hold a charge anymore. Charge it, take the battery out for a week and then put it back in and see if it's dead. If it dies without being in the remote then replace the battery. As for the car locking with no battery, it's possible that there is a capacitor in there that had enough juice to power one keypunch. Or maybe you might be high. lol. I bet it's just a bad battery, sounds like it.

I had a similar problem (but the car also had problems starting) which was just solved with a liberal application of oil in the ignition barrel (which solved the starting problem, but also caused the remote fob to start working again). My remote is an after market one, so was not fitted from new. Not sure if this helps, but worth a try before you fork out for new stuff that may not work!

It happened to me. I was told that the push button had worn out and I needed a new key as the garage checked the code and they said it was o.k. The key would cost around 拢40 and the programming would cost another 拢40 so needless to say I stuck with unlocking the car manually.

Barring that, WalMart's top of the line battery (the ones in the yellow case) are excellent bang for the buck ....got one in my full-size truck that I've had for about five years or so.



The %26quot;number%26quot; or rating you're looking for is the CCA or Cold Cranking Amps ....this is supposed to represent the battery's current flow capability when it is cold ...first start on a winter morning kind of thing ...I have no idea what temp they use for the rating. Bottom line is the higher the CCA rating is, in general terms, the better the battery ....the longer it will last and the more it will cost. I have a 1991 Nissan Maxima and every time it's out in the rain the battery dies. We just got it changed too a few weeks ago but it rained last night and now nothing works. I can't press the button to unlock it and it won't respond at all when trying to start. I would look around the lights assemblies for a spot the looks like burnt spots.

I would suggest getting a waterproof battery box...that way no rain water gets on the battery...also...check the water level in the battery itself.

It sounds like something is draining your battery while the car is off. If you have a stereo system installed, are your aftermarket amps wired into a switched power line? Otherwise, your alternator may not be installed properly or another electrical component may be remaining on while the car is off.
