My car battery recently died and I had to buy a new one. However, now that I have a new one (same size battery), my car starts revving up way too much when idling. Then when I change gears the car lurches forward (if going into Drive) or backward (if going into reverse). Is this because of the new battery, or something else?
Also, the red warning light for my battery is still on even though I have this new battery. Is that an indicator of a different problem? Btw, I have a 1989 Honda Accord.Can a car battery be too powerful?You have some other problem than the battery...
The red battery light probably means your alternator isn't charging the battery...it could be bad, or the connections might be dirty...
The lurching and high revs are part of a different problem, but connected..

The battery is the sourse of electrical force needed to power the starter when the engine is started,it also powers the ignition system.
once the engine is operating the charging system takes over supplying a higher voltage to run everything on the vehicle and recharge the battery.
The battery in theory, is just going along for the ride. If the voltage in the electrical system is constant ,then all is good.If a load on the system or any other reason the voltage drops below the voltage of the battery, the battery will supply power to maintain a constant voltage.
When the demand ends the alternator,again will recharge the battery.
On the computerized cars of today, the alternators are so powerful there should be no situation that ,other than 'a DEAD SHORT' that will affect the charging system this way

Once car is running it is running on gas, battery just sits there. You have a vacuum leak or an accelerator linkage is sticking problem. Vacuum lines are sucking air is most likely.
The red light indicates that the battery is not getting charged. Either an alternator belt is broken,missing, or the alternator or regulator is malfunctioning. You must get this fixed immediately. Your car could die anywhere, anytime day or night. battery will have nothing to do with the cars running,as the battery light is on the alternator is at fault...any car shop will test it free of charge...you car is an auto?...get your tickover adjusted down as it may be to high causing it to jerk forward ...It sounds like you have a vacuum leak causing your idle to jump up. It is not the battery. If the light is still on, have the alternator checked.Fast Idle needs to be adjusted and you have a problem with the electrical circuit (alternator, etc.)
